Brilliant but long and wordy.

I can understand why this is a classic, but there's no tension in the book to drive the plot forward, and both of the main characters are odious.

Really enjoyed the first 2/3 of the book, which compared well to the best F. Scott Fitzgerald works. But the religious conflict in the final third was dull and involved a lot of fatuous dialogue.

Took me long enough to get around to it.

I've never seen such long sentences and paragraphs in my life.

This book appears on every greatest-books list I've come across, but something here was lost on me. I found the parts written in the Consul's drunken style to be irritating.

Second of the Leatherstocking Tales that I've read, and probably the last, because Cooper's style makes Dickens' look terse.
