  For such a short book, it was a great read! it take an idea that’s not quite new, and puts a new spin on it. The writing in the book is quick and fun to read. The characters were also quite memorable and extremely likable.

  The magic part of the book was simple, yet satisfying. It was fun to read Bea do her little spells with a simple “zap”. Plus, it was fun to see the magic at work. The plot itself was really good and easy to follow. Ana has wit, and her thoughts are extremely entertaining and funny to read. Naturally, in nearly all YA’s out there, there is a love triangle in the making, but it’s not cheesy or overdone. Both Nikolai and Elias are likable in their own way although I’d have to say, I’m leaning towards Elias a lot more.

  I’ve read one other of Hallaway’s books and enjoyed it as well, so I’m going to continue reading this series. It’s enjoyable and a fun light read without any overbearing cliches and cheesiness. Give this one a try if you’re into paranormal YA and want something quick between long epic reads.

  This was my first book featuring sirens/mermaids. It was an interesting concept and the mystery surrounding the plot wasn’t too bad. The plot itself was not too bad and the setting suited the story. There was just one problem, and that was the characters.

  I couldn’t begin to like the characters, even if I tried. They were bland, they were uninteresting and if it hadn’t been for the plot being slightly interesting, I probably wouldn’t have gone further into this book. The supposed romance featured in the book wasn’t that great either - I suppose because the characters weren’t that interesting to begin with. The romance seemed forced, and artificial, and they both acted in a very robotic nature.

  The plot was in between. At times it was interesting, at other times, there’s a lull and it tended to drag. I liked how Vanessa was uncovering secret after secret regarding her sister, and the ending did make up for some of the shortfalls - although I still remain not satisfied with the way the characters were done.

  I will be reading the sequel to this, but am not in a big rush to go out and get it. The book was an okay read, but it could have been made much better, especially when it came to its’ characters. This is the type of book where good character creation would have made the book much better and more fun to read.

  Oh, it doesn’t get any easier for Vlad does it?

  Again, this book was a great read like the last two. It carries on from the previous book (reading them in order is greatly recommended) and Vlad is always ever developing. The plot this time was just as good, and it kept the page turning. I notice Brewer’s writing just keeps getting better and better with each passing book.

  I was scared for Henry and Vlad when Henry had that little moment where he wanted out of his drudge role. Although it’s understandable, I had to be a little irked at first because of the way Henry was trying to get out of the friendship. WTF Henry, ignoring Vlad just like that is..not cool. Not to mention out of character (never thought Henry was a prissy type to do such a thing, I thought he was the all around popular nice guy) and, well I’d have to say it’s petty. But, when everything just came out into the open I was glad Henry wised up and just let Vlad know how he felt.

  The ending nearly had me pulling my hair. I can’t BELIEVE Vlad did that to Meredith. Despite her fondness for the color pink, and how she oozes of bubblegum candy goodness, I was ready to accept her and Vlad together. But noooooo. Vlad just turns that upside down - although it was well intended, the way he went about it was not cool.

  More plot development, and much more to look forward to, fans of Vlad Tod are going to love this book. Those who haven’t started, get to it now. They’re excellent so far.

  I get weary when I try to read something that falls into this type of genre, because I think it’s going to be filled with glorified fluid swapping moments, not much of a plot, with cliched characters that will induce moments of eye rolling from me. Thankfully, I was wrong and I’m glad I’m wrong. It was the total exact opposite of what I thought it was going to be.

  I liked Mercy’s character a lot. She’s a tough girl, but has a bit of feminine side, but I like that she’s able to take care of herself (in a fight, and in maintaining her life). I liked her job as a mechanic, it’s certainly different and gritty, and her character most certainly goes well with the setting. Her ‘gift’ as a walker was your average fancy term for ‘shapeshifter’ but she turns into a coyote. Which is also different and interesting to see. I really liked how she differs from a lot of the urban fantasy heroines out there. She’s definitely natural and likable. The rest of the characters are also well done. I liked how there’s a little bit of everything supernatural, it’s almost like it’s a subtle hint or taste of the things the reader will encounter as they go through the series.

  The plot itself was okay. It had its’ lulls here and there and sometimes it got just a little too hard to follow. The world building was also all right - again nothing special but the mood and the tone of the book was well done. The romance is there (some reviews I’ve read said there was not enough of it, I say it’s perfect and it should stay that way) and the chemistry seems to be developing (and might possibly grow as the series continues further). The action and mystery aspect of the book was also well done. The action scenes were well written, and there’s plenty of them to go around.

  I most definitely recommend this to any urban fantasy reader. Those that dislike the hyper sexualized female roles will like this one, as Mercy is definitely not that! sure the cover can be deceiving but give this a try, it was a great read.

  I started to like this book a lot, it was hilariously funny and puts a whole new twist to the vampire theme. However there were just some parts of the book that did not sit well with me and the book suddenly became something that I did not expect. Perhaps it was the author’s intention. Perhaps not.

  At first I thought Doug was comical. He was certainly someone you could either relate to (as being a social outcast in the school class system) or someone you made fun of (oh come on, I’m sure there are times you DID laugh at them for some reason or another don’t be so high and mighty thinking you didn’t). Then as the book progresses, you realize some of the reasons why Doug isn’t well liked.

  Turns out, Doug is...a jerk. His comments towards minorities and other groups aren’t that funny at all and it may offend some readers. His treatment of Jay is also why he’s a jerk. For a best friend, Jay tends to take a lot in, and although he may seem like a loyal sidekick, Doug treats him like dirt and likes to openly make fun of him in front of other friends to make himself look better. As the book progresses, at first, Doug may seem all right, but then as you turn the pages, you see more of his true colors show, and they’re not what they seem. He turns out to be not very likable at all.

  The plot in itself is pretty good. At first. Then it just flatlines throughout the second half of the story. I’m not sure why there was such a big mystery behind Sejal and her case of ‘The Google’. I don’t know why the explanation of it took such a long time to be revealed. In fact that rather annoyed me because she kept on mentioning it and I’m asking each time; ‘WTF is that?!’ when it was revealed I almost just about gave up trying to figure it out. Werewolves, and vampire hunters are then added into the plot, but none of that really makes it stand out or makes the plot move forward. A lot of the time I felt some things were definitely rushed and some characters just disappear. Then the ending has somewhat of a Donnie Darko flavor to it and this is where I wonder if I really liked the book, or I didn’t.

  It was, all right I suppose. It had a great potential to be an excellent book, but then the plot stops, characters disappear, and you’re left with a rather mediocre read. Yes, Doug is a jerk and that may turn some readers off from this book but I was more concerned with the plot itself. There were just too many loose ends to let me fully enjoy the story.

  First of all, bonus points to a very beautiful cover. Really loved it. Second, I really liked this book. The best of it was the setting description of the boarding school and the overall mood throughout the book. It was dark, it was gothic, and it held a lot of secrets ready to be revealed.

  Caitlyn overall, was a good character to read. She wasn’t over the top whiny or moody like some protagonists I’ve come across. She’s realistic and likable. The chemistry she has between herself and Raphael is well done (and Raphael is VERY crushworthy).

  The plot does develop a little slower than some. The descriptions of France and its’ buildings is well done so picturing the setting is easy and establishes the story so readers will have a clear picture. I liked how the story carries the reader through different time periods, but also it’s like time traveling through dreams. It’s interesting, for sure and the transitions aren’t confusing, it’s pretty much clear and easy to read. The ghost story part of the book was very well done. I wasn’t expecting the outcome and it caught me entirely off guard. The treasure hunting aspect (yes, there’s a lot to pack into this plot!) was good and interesting, and it wasn’t too overdone.

  There was one thing that really did bother me, and that was towards the ending. It got a little too convenient and well to be frank, rather cheesy. I thought it should have been done differently or..perhaps that particular event with Thierry just should not have happened. In my opinion, I found that part to be just so predictable and if the rest of the book hadn’t been so great, the score based on that ending alone would have been lower.

  Great for YA fans who want a little bit of everything (a ghost story, a romance, a treasure hunt, and a bit of historical fiction). It’s worth the read. Some might be put off with the slow development of the plot so this might not be for some who prefer something fast paced.

  At first this book started off great! it was an interesting idea and I was really interested and engaged with this book. Yet as the book progressed it got really confusing with the flashbacks Pierce has, and her time spent with this mysterious stranger (you find out later who he really is). The flashbacks would have been much better if they actually were related to the present day events but they just seemed to be a rehashing of memories. Even so, it feels it’s all jumbled and it’s makes the reading awkward.

  I also had a hard time liking Pierce. She was like a wooden doll with hardly any feeling or form and to be blunt, she just seemed so blah. Nothing exciting at all. I didn’t quite understand her relationship with John Hayden. It was like she liked him, but then she steered clear away from him. Although he ends up saving her from several horrible experiences, she just wants to get away from him as if he’s the plague. Ok. I supposed there’s not a problem with that but if they’re supposed to be the romance couple here, the chemistry seems way off and it just feels like it’s not there. Even the rules of ‘Opposites Attract’ does not work here. Pierce just seemed so wishy washy half of the time I ended up not really liking her in the first place.

  The plot itself was okay. Although it’s supposed to be somewhat similar to the Hades and Persephone myth you don’t see much of it except for some parts here and there. Even so, it’s does not seem well put and just feels like a cut and paste job, with a lot of fluff in between. It does pick up in the end though, and it’s interesting enough for me to wait for the second book, but I am not in a real rush to get it.

  I’d say take it or leave it with this one. I have not read Meg Cabot’s books before but fans of her might like this book more than I did. Those who want a better rendition of the Hades/Persephone myth, try The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter.

  What I loved most about this book was the setting. I love just about anything New Orleans. The setting was richly described and I loved the cemetery scene, and especially the Mardi Gras scene. Everything about the setting was wonderful and the book swept me away with it. I loved the ghost story as it fits hand in hand with the setting so you have this underlying paranormal feeling (although I think it’s not needed as New Orleans itself gives you that paranormal feeling anyways!).

  I really liked Rebecca. I liked how her social status at her school didn’t matter to her and she went on with life however she pleased. I liked how she didn’t let snooty girls like Helena and Marianne dictate her life. Who annoyed me the most were Toby, Claire, and Amy. Toby because he was such a jerk and the urge to punch him in the face got stronger whenever he appeared in the book. Claire and Amy were immensely annoying because it felt as if they were with Rebecca out of convenience, and to have someone around to make themselves look better. I just couldn’t stand their chatter and the way they tried to make Rebecca look stupid (although Rebecca hardly cared less about what they talked about most of the time - which I thought, was cool and why I liked Rebecca even more).

  I’d have to say, Anton started to grow on me. He did seem like such a nice guy and he fit the similar mold to Rebecca - that he didn’t care what others thought. So in that sense, they did look nice together.

  The ghost story plot with Lisette was really interesting. It gave the story a good feeling of mystery and the setting helped a lot to give the plot a good creepiness factor. There’s also a nice rich sense of history behind the book and it’s well explained and thought out so it gives the reader a good comprehension on why things are like they are in the story. Although the mystery deepens as you progress through the book. The real action is at the last third of the book. The suspense really does build up - especially the Mardi Gras scene and I got so mad that these old families would ever think of such a thing to do against Rebecca.

  What I particularly did not like is what in the world happened to Toby??!! he just disappears despite his actions??!!! I wanted him to get his comeuppance! I just thought the ending was a bit rushed.

  Either way, the rich descriptive setting with a wonderful ghost story does make up for the shortcomings. It’s a well written book and well worth the read. It’s an excellent choice for those that like ghost stories or paranormal young adult fiction.

  Holly Black’s writing still continues to keep readers entertained with her sequel to White Cat. There’s still twists and turns to go through, and Cassel is such a great anti hero there’s nothing to not like about him. The reader can’t help but feel for Cassel, he’s gone through so much! and he’s goes through a lot more in Red Glove.

  The plot is just as good as it was with White Cat. Lots of guessing, plenty of revelations, and the cliffhanger ending made the book such a great read (although now I have to wait for a while for the third installment of this series). Cassel not only develops as a character, but his relationships with his other friends and Lila develop with him. Although Lila was ‘worked’ on, I couldn’t help but love how her and Cassel felt right for each other. Their chemistry was just right without being overdone and cheesy but you still had that nagging truth in the back of your head; Lila has been worked on, so this love can’t be real. But then you ask yourself, but the love sure feels real. I love this kind of writing! the author just initiates these doubts and thoughts to the reader which makes the reading experience all the more enjoyable.

  As mentioned before, the twists and turns are just as good as the first book, and the new things Cassel has to deal with add more to the story. You’d have to feel sorry for the guy, it’s as if he’s meant to deal with a lot of crap day after day, and his family doesn’t really help with that fact either (except for his Grandpa, which remains one of my quiet favorite characters in the novel). I loved how the revelations (both big and small) are revealed in this book, perhaps it was the way the author revealed them, or maybe because I was so engrossed in the book but each one was shocking as the previous one.

  With the ending the way it was for this one, it’s going to be hard to wait for the last book! Holly Black’s writing just keeps getting better and better with each book she writes.

  Like The Hollow, this is a pretty chunky book and long. Unlike the first book though, I found the pace of this one to be more faster, perhaps because much more happens in this plot. However, although I am glad the plot is quicker and more interesting, I’m also pleased to see her writing has not changed and is still as good as The Hollow. I love the way the story is written. The town is still quaint and descriptions are still done in nice detail. It’s the writing style that really gets me into reading this book further.

  What’s another great feature in this book is you get to piece together more about Kristen and the mystery guy she was going out with. There’s also a few additions of characters into the story which adds more mystery into the plot. Vincent stands out the most because not only is he a jerk but he also has a reason why he’s suddenly into the picture. Vincent also delivers a great cliffhanger in the ending which makes me just want to scream for the third book to come out right away! an evil naughty side of me thought Aubra got what she deserved. She’s such a snotty little thing so I had no sympathies for her when she came with the waterworks.

  The chemistry between Caspian and Abbey is still there but I feel it has intensified into a whole new level. It’s almost like a heart wrenching romance because they’re so nice together, but yet they can’t physically be together and that just adds more drama to the romance - which I absolutely love. Now that Ben is in the picture, it adds the typical love triangle (sort of) but unlike most of them where I find I like one better than the other, I like both Ben and Caspian. Ben of course, would be the better choice, as he’s physically there.

  I am really looking forward to the final installment of this trilogy. I love the writing style, the great character development and chemistry between the main couple, and with the cliffhanger ending it’s hard not to be impatient! Those that had trouble with The Hollow, keep going! this book is much better and worth the read!

  This was a fantastic conclusion to the series and I wouldn’t know how to end it as good as this. I am glad some of the loose ends have been tied up, however there are still some that are left open. I wonder if there’s going to be more to this (I hope!)

  The pace is slower than usual, but in return you get great character development Each of these characters had their own issues, and although the bickering still continues, each of them have grown up and matured. What I enjoyed reading was more into Chloe’s gift as a necromancer. There is a lot more to her ‘gift’ and that provided some good interesting reading. What was also interesting was Tori. Although still snarky at times, she’s kept that in check and even manages to help and defend Chloe when needed. I thought she grew up and matured the most. I started liking her a lot more as the trilogy unfolded, at first I used to hate her a lot, now she ended up being much more agreeable and likable.

  I was so happy with Chloe and Derek! I loved them both together. There was a sense of togetherness and they compliment each other so well. I loved how Chloe was so supportive of Derek and his ‘condition’, and Derek would protect Chloe by any means possible. I think they made a great couple!

  The story overall was good despite having some loose ends open and close. The writing was still excellent and there were still moments where you had the heebie jeebies. There were quite a few extreme tense moments (especially when you find out who’s on who’s side) and this was great to read, but what I enjoyed the most were the moments with Chloe and Derek. I really loved reading about them together. It was nice seeing these characters develop and grow as the story went along. The ending was really good with a few revelations revealed. Some might say it’s not really an ending as it leaves things to be settled.

  I still say this was a great ending to this trilogy and I want to know if there’s going to be more to it. Tori has become such a fascinating character all of a sudden that I wish there’s going to be more on these great characters and how they’re going to manage living on. It’s a great series and not one to be missed! I absolutely recommend this for YA Paranomal readers out there!

  I have to say, I literally read this book from cover to cover in one sitting. It was that interesting. I loved the eerie creepy sensations you got while reading as Lia discovers more behind Alice’s malicious actions, and the paranormal aspects of the book really enhanced the dark creepy theme that dominates throughout the storyline.

  Despite the usual cliche of sister vs sister (with twins to add) I thought the main idea behind the storyline was really good and it does differ somewhat from the usual battle of the sisters plots. What’s also nice to see is the addition of a historical fiction setting - which I personally like as it’s one of my favorite genres to read.

  Lia and Alice are great characters and perfect opposites. Alice is just filled with evil that you can’t help but just hate her for her action and behavior. When things come to a climax towards the end of the novel (involving the twins’ brother Henry) I almost wanted to jump in and intercept Alice. I hated her for what she did. She’s just awful overall!

  Although Lia might seem like the weaker one of the two, I can only hope she’ll get stronger later in the trilogy as it progresses. She’s got so much on her plate right now I’m hoping she doesn’t crack and become all emotional (like most main characters do in a series) later in the second or third book.

  Despite a wonderful story, great characters, and an even paced plot, I can’t help but think there’s some similarities between this book and the Gemma Doyle series (by Libba Bray), but it’s not completely the same. If you’ve read both, then you just can’t help comparing the two. I can’t say yet which one I like better as I just started with this series.

  However! if you liked the Gemma Doyle series, do pick this one up. It is worth the read and is a great book. The dark creepy theme and plot, a nicely developed cast of characters, and Alice becoming villain of the year gives the book a lot of substance to go through and will keep you interested until the end (which will make you want to get out and get the second book).

  I liked this book because it’s different from the myriads of urban fantasy novels I’ve read in the past. It’s different because it contains Eastern mythology, mysticism and religions. The setting takes place in Singapore (which earns bonus points from me, as this is the first book I’ve read with a setting there). Also, the story line is very dark, noir and very gritty. It’s an interesting blend of fantasy and science fiction and by putting to two together gives you a unique world. I also thought it was interesting how characters can travel from hell, to Singapore, and back again.

  The plot itself is interesting. There’s a lot of twists and turns and as Wei Chen investigates further into the mystery, he realizes there’s more to it than just soul trafficking. There’s also the second plot which involves Zhu Irzh and his case which takes place in Hell. I liked his plot more, as it had an element of intrigue and explained in detail the hierarchy of Demon politics and how they relate to one another. Zhu Irzh also provides the comic relief. Unlike Chen, his approach is more laid back and he provides a witty comeback every so often. It’s a well written plot and interesting enough to keep you reading. The action is good and makes the pace go faster, not to mention the sub plot involving Inari was also really interesting as well. I especially liked the overall tone of the story. It’s really dark and has a very ‘noir’ feel to it. The setting descriptions add more to the tone of the book – especially describing the humidity and heat in the city. It added more to the feeling of the story and takes the reader to the setting. So, it’s like you’re there following the characters.

  It’s a great start to what looks like a really good series and I’m definitely going to continue reading it. It shows great promise and it looks like things could go really complicated with Chen and Zhu Irzh. I do recommend this to those that love Harry Dresden, and Felix Castor, but with an Asian setting and with a much more dark and grittier tone. Fans of urban fantasy should also get a good read out of this book.

  Fast paced action, better than the first book

  I found this book to be much better than the first one. There was twice as much action, and Felix has developed a much more likable personality. His wit is sharper and although I found his retorts and comebacks funny, they were twice as fun to read in this book.

  The storyline was much better, and more exciting. More twists and turns were added to make the plot more interesting. I liked how the main plot branched out into several mini story arcs, but they all came to an end and were all tied up nicely. It wasn’t confusing and it was clearly written for the reader to understand without any problems.

  Juliet happened to be the big surprise for me in this book, and I couldn’t help but like her despite the contract she has to adhere to. She turned out to be the secondary character that really grew on me. I liked her. She has an interesting relationship with Felix. They need to help each other yet she has to keep to her contract. There’s conflict but it seems more likely that Juliet will be Felix’ sidekick - at least I hope so because they do seem to make a great pair when working together. (Even though it looks like Juliet does the easy work and Felix does the dirty harmful parts).

  The action was most of the main focus in this book. Plenty of fighting, explosions, Felix running from the law and fighting numerous adversaries, it’s all a lot of good fun reading. It annoyed me immensely when the police thought Felix was behind a crime and was hindering his investigation. You could feel his frustration and anger, but you cheered when he managed to get out of the situation in time.

  I am definitely going to continue reading this series. I’m hoping it all goes well with Felix Castor, as bad luck always seems to follow him wherever he goes! Those who are new to the series, I know the first one isn’t as good, but stick with it, because this one makes it well worth the read. All the action starts here in this book and the ending will make you want to go and find out what happens next.
