The academic world that the main characters live in adds a certain depth and realism to the story and takes away the teenage-ness of the vampire/supernatural book.
The setup for this book is quite elaborate, and a lot attention is paid to the fact that a vampire is /old/ (and has a past) as well as to history in itself. The only thing I didn't like was that for me the setup is perhaps a bit /too/ elaborate... The story is a bit slwo at times, and I didn't know this was a triology before I started reading and now I have to wait ages to know how it continues! <.<
