This is one of the first books of poetry I ever owned, acquired when I was in high school for a class in American literature at the low price of $1.35. We were assigned to read either a collection of Robert Frost's poems or this one of Carl Sandburg's and then write a report on what we thought of the poems. I suppose I can consider Sandburg as one of the shaping influences of my young mind. I identified with him very easily because my maternal grandfather was a Ukrainian immigrant to this country (via Canada) and worked in the factories of the Ford Motor Co. It's populist flavor, concern for the common man, appealed to me.
