L'aggettivo che più mi è venuto alla mente a proposito di questo libro è "delicato". Non so, a dire la verità, se sia un romanzo particolarmente memorabile, non ho trovato neanche citazioni illuminanti da riportare... eppure, a parte qualche sporadico eccesso di dettagli, l'ho trovato molto piacevole e l'ho letto più che volentieri. Forse perché in generale amo i romanzi che accompagnano la vita di una persona dalla nascita (qui si potrebbe addirittura dire da prima ancora del concepimento, fin dall'episodio che influirà sul nome scelto per il protagonista) fino alla maturità, raccontando vite ordinarie con la capacità di renderle coinvolgenti.
Molto abilmente, secondo me, l'autrice mostra il problema dell'identità - che è uno dei temi chiave del romanzo - da cose che sembrerebbero, almeno in parte, c'entrare poco. L'identità, sembra di capire, si annida ovunque, anche dove meno ce l'aspettiamo. E al tempo stesso, è solo uno degli aspetti della difficoltà di diventare adulti, trovare la propria strada, le proprie idee, la propria responsabilità e un senso di sé che viene (anche) da mille altre cose.

Una delle principali fonti delle citazioni di Wilde... eppure lette in contesto sono un'altra cosa. C'è un sottofondo di tragedia dietro ognuna di quelle frasi brillanti e apparentemente (o anche effettivamente) ciniche.

Una delle principali fonti delle citazioni di Wilde... eppure lette in contesto sono un'altra cosa. C'è un sottofondo di tragedia dietro ognuna di quelle frasi brillanti e apparentemente (o anche effettivamente) ciniche.
Forse è vero che c'è un che di enfatico, di melodrammatico in questo romanzo, come si dice nella nota critica. E' vero forse anche che Wilde era un figlio del suo tempo, autore vittoriano che non sempre riusciva a sfuggire ai vittoriani difetti del suo tempo nel momento stesso in cui li dissacrava spietatamente. Ma è significativo che in una lettera avesse scritto "Basil Hallaward è quello che io ritengo di essere: Lord Henry è quello che il mondo pensa che io sia. Dorian Gray è ciò che avrei voluto essere - in un altro tempo, forse."
Il cinico, spietato Oscar Wilde, mai moralista, aveva secondo me un senso morale molto più profondo di quello che gli veniva accreditato in vita, e ancora oggi forse misconosciuto. Ho questo sospetto da quando, bambina, lessi le sue fiabe e me ne innamorai perdutamente.
Secondo me Wilde era un idealista, con in più il dono non solo di saper vedere ipocrisie e orrori, ma di saperli rovesciare con un sorriso, amaro ma pur sempre un sorriso.
Le elite lo amarono fino a quando poterono illudersi che il suo fosse soltanto spirito, la bonaria presa in giro di un mondo al quale apparteneva. Quando si resero conto che in realtà parlava sul serio, e che agiva sul serio, lo rinnegarono.
A parte questo, la lingua in cui scrive è ai miei occhi un'autentica meraviglia, sempre e comunque (secondo me è un autore che letto in traduzione, sia pur ottima, perde inevitabilmente molto). E non si esce dal sorriso di Wilde senza un pensiero in più nella testa.
La descrizione di un mondo, del nostro mondo, di quello che c'è dietro le azioni e le parole che consideriamo "normali" e quasi banali. Il rapporto tra arte e morale, tra l'Arte e il Bello, tra la bellezza e l'etica, tra l'etica e la vanità
e molto altro ancora. Con un principio di base a legare tutto: vivi la tua vita e pagane il prezzo, perché l'unica etica possibile è quella di mettere in gioco te stesso: non tanto la tua vita, ma la tua reputazione. Perché solo così, forse, sfuggirai al peccato più grande, alla base di ogni ipocrisia: quello di credere che un'azione sia buona perché il mondo la ritiene tale.
L'avevo giudicato bello, mi sono ricreduta. E' un capolavoro.

I love the Caterpillar and the Cheshire Cat, I love the March Hare and the Mad Hatter, I love the parody of well-meaning, sentimental Victorian rhymes, I love adventure and explanation and would not know which is best. I love this book, it's just as simple as that:)

The Caterpillar and Alice looked at each other for some time in silence: at last the Caterpillar took the hookah out of his mouth, and addressed her in a languid, sleepy voice. "Who are you?" said the Caterpillar.
This was not an encouraging opening for a conversation. Alice replied, rather shyly, "I-I hardly know, Sir, just at present - at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have changed several times since then."
"What do you mean by that?" said the Caterpillar, sternly. "Explain yourself!"
I can't explain myself, Sir, said Alice, "because I'm not myself, you see."
"I don't see", said the Caterpillar.
"I'm afraid I can't put it more clearly," Alice replied, very politely, "for I can't understand it myself, to begin with; and being so many different sizes in a day is very confusing."

Era da un po' che non ridevo da sola senza ritegno. Lo consiglierei anche come "lettura da autobus". E' breve e chissà che vedendo i sorrisi deliziati sulla vostra faccia qualcun altro non si converta alle gioie della lettura!

Che devo fare... ogni volta che riprendo in mano un qualunque libro di Harry Potter mi ri-innamoro. La lingua, la fantasia, la capacità di trattare temi importanti in tono leggero, e una rara capacità di narrare. E tante altre cose che magari non mi vengono in mente adesso. E per questo ogni tanto l ... (continue)

Che devo fare... ogni volta che riprendo in mano un qualunque libro di Harry Potter mi ri-innamoro. La lingua, la fantasia, la capacità di trattare temi importanti in tono leggero, e una rara capacità di narrare. E tante altre cose che magari non mi vengono in mente adesso. E per questo ogni tanto lo rileggo...:)

Molto, molto carino. Una favola ecologista scritta in tempi non sospetti, molto avanti per l'epoca. Un po' ingenuo, forse, ma di quell'ingenuità di cui si sente la mancanza e che fa piacere, di tanto in tanto, ritrovare.
