Yes, you are right - perhaps Murray does draw his conclusions from a narrow range of authors, but like the watching TV we can easily get used to those things we don't agree with - programmes on the 'truth' of evolution, or a little bit of nudity, etc. - so that eventually we begin to accept them. This can clearly happen when reading fiction. I find that if I am reading a book that is a good story, and am suddenly presented with something distasteful, it's best just to skip it without pretending to myself that I am adult enough to read it without being affected.

Yes, I enjoyed the other Murray book. It's a shame about the rift between Packer and Lloyd-Jones - I really do enjoy reading Packer. I used to listen with delight when he used to speak at the Puritan Conference. But I can't understand Packer's attitude toward the Catholic Church (not Catholics, I hasten to say!)

Yes, I definitely think The Book Thief is one book you should read as a rest from theology, commentaries, etc. Dr. Lloyd-Jones advocates the minister - and surely this should include the ordinary Christian - to make a definite effort to read other types of books in order that their vision of life is wider than Christian thinking and theology. I don't remember ever reading of him mentioning that he turned to fiction for a change but he advised secular and Christian history, Christian and secular biography, and even military history, etc.. Of course one has to be careful that this interest doesn't take over one's reading pattern. As I indicated previously I read Christian / Theological magazines (years ago I was receiving 18 per month - too excessive by half - now it's only Evangelical Now, Evangelical Times ( I used to help with Paste-up at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in the early days of Evangelical Times), and Banner of Truth magazine) and dip into commentaries, plus I listen to MP3 sermons downloaded from the Internet, so the secular is still only a portion of my reading. My favourite secular reading is military history.

Hi,Ron, I apologise for not replying to your comments about me. I was just a little embarrassed. I take a great interest in what you are reading. You seem to be the nearest in 'Taste Compatability' to me. I have just about entered all the complete books read - excepting Dickens, and a few others. Now I can continue with comments. Praise God for people like Erasmus and Caxton: the Bible and books to read. Wonderful!
