Into the Wild

Seen the movie so I started the book. Protagonist is a cross between an idealistic dreamer and true life Huck Finn. It is well researched and compelling to read and it unearths a desire to try something like this yourself. Don't think I will but fun to hink about.

Clapton doesn't hold back describing his lows and is quite honest in his assessment of himself.

A book about excess, as well as the downfall of the most successful band of this generation. Of course it only addresses events from Slash's point of view, but he is reasonable enough to admit that Axl will have a different point of view which is also valid.
An absorbing read as it often is when you mix sex, drugs and rock n roll.

This is Rafe Esquith's first book and in my opinion the better of the two. It is part memoir and part how to do it, and as with his other book, you need to sort through what is good for you. This is Rafe Esquith's first book and in my opinion the better of the two. It is part memoir and part how to do it, and as with his other book, you need to sort through what is good for you. It is refreshing to hear how critical he was of himself, as identifying your flaws allows you to excel later. There is an element of witch hunt about the book as he identifies the flaws of others, but this can be beneficial for a teacher as it can show you the errors or merits of your way.
As long as you don't treat this book as the gospal of teaching it is a great book to hear about how one man achieved great things in a classroom.

It becomes clear very quickly that unless you are prepared to sacrifice all other aspects of her life, then this book cannot be implemented in its entirety, but it is a good chance to develop your own critical thinking skills and choose what works in your own classroom.

This book is a good read. It is written in the third person and the chapter seem to fly by. I'd easily knock off 10 chapters in an hour, but what I really love about this book is the character development of the protagonist, Jesse Stone. Jesse is a flawed police chief with a drinking problem and a broken marriage. Despite this he is essentially a good man. As with other novels from the Jesse Stone series, he deals with the dilema of doing what is morally right and what is legally right, all while having a low opinion of his worth as a person. This character development is the reason the book works, with the exception of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables I have never found a literary character that I enjoyed more.

Not the most memorable account of the Everest disaster. Too much of the focus appears to be avoiding conflict and not enough on analyzing some of the horrible errors of judgement that have been documented in other books. The author has chosen to focus on her group run by Scott Fischer with far less mention of the Mountain Madness team than other books. For those who wanted to feel sympathy for Anatoli Boukereev, this book along with his own biography 'The Climb' certainly paint him in a more positive light.

When I first read this book I found it fascinating and the account of events on Everest quite upsetting. Since this time I have read many other accounts of the events on 10 May 1996. As a result I'm not as quick to praise 'Into Thin Air' any more. It is an absorbing read and remains one of the best written books on this subject, but there are enough disputed points to ensure it can not be considered the bible of the events that took place on that date.
If you were to only choose one book to read on this disaster, this would probably be the one to read.

This is a fascinating book. How can there be all of this unused knowledge in baseball?
Oakland are not necessarily the only team doing it right, but they have a template which teams such as the Devil Rays, Royals and Brewers could benefit from. It made me look on the Internet to find out the fortunes of some of the key subjects. Nick Swisher still going strong, Jeremy Brown hasn't quite panned out, but it is the sort of book that the content stays in your mind after you have completed reading it. I'm definitely interested in more on this subject and I'm sure as teams head into spring training, I'll be looking at the A's and trying to see where they have scored their bargains this year. Certainly a re read.
