They had stood that way for a long time in front of the fire, its burning tossing ruddy chunks of light, the shadow of their bodies a single column against the rock.”
Ammetto di essere stata abbastanza scettica nei confronti di questo racconto, immaginando quanto lavoro di rielaborazione e adattamento gli sceneggiatori dovevano aver fatto per poter trasportare sullo schermo solo una trentina scarsa di pagine, trasformandole in un film di ben due ore; eppure mi sono dovuta ricredere. Ripensandoci, la Proulx mette in questo racconto lo stretto indispensabile, riuscendo a comprimere in pochi episodi e frasi, una storia d'amore di ben 20 anni, accompagnando il tutto con una prosa arida e senza fronzoli, che ben si adatta sia all'ambientazione western (ci muoviamo tra Texas, Wyoming e Messico) e alla caratterizzazione dei due protagonisti (soprattutto Ennis, un uomo asciutto e di poche parole).
Credo, tuttavia, che la mia opinione riguardo questo racconto sia alquanto falsata dalla visione del film, che forse ha reso tutto più vivido e reale, aumentando la mia partecipazione emotiva (ovvero i fiumi di lacrime che ho versato) e il mio affetto verso i due protagonisti *corre di nuovo a piangere*
[Capisco anche la riprovazione di alcune persone, che fanno notare come Ennis e Jack nel racconto non sono presentati come due uomini “belli belli in maniera assurda” (cit.), mentre nel film sono interpretati da Heath Ledger e Jake Gyllenhaal che, insomma, non si buttano via; ecco, non vorrei sembrare cruda, ma già l'idea che due uomini bellocci possano amarsi (!) e fare sesso (!!!) crea scompiglio e svenimenti, chissà alla vista di due uomini brutti (oddio, sia mai, la gente brutta esiste ma non si deve rappresentare sullo schermo, soprattutto in una storia d'amore), per cui io l'ho vista come una scelta inevitabile.]
