Cover of The Dresden Files
  • The first Dresden Files Graphic Novel

I was very excited to hear that the Dresden Files were being done in this format. In Jim's intro, he says that he's always seen it as a comic when writing, which has always come across strongly as a reader. This is an original story set before the first book (Storm Front). It felt a bit short and simple compared to some of the longer novels but I've always thought the series starts off properly at book 3 anyway.
The artwork itself is excellent - everything/one looks how I thought they'd look.
It's a promising start and I'm looking forward to Storm Front as a graphic novel. ... (continue)

Cover of The Camel Bookmobile
  • Ticked the box for Kenya on Round the World Challenge, but otherwise...

Found this a bit disappointing. In places it felt like the author was trying too hard and it was also a bit "worthy". I would have preferred some more satisfying resolution than the ending had.

Cover of Heart-Shaped Box
  • Like father, like son

Good book - quite a simple story and little bit predictable as it went on. But had some good shocks in it.
Very similar style to his dad (Stephen King) - not just in genre, but something about the tone of writing too. If you're a SK fan, I can recommend this.

Cover of Blood and Sand
  • I don't read a lot of biographies or autobiographies. This was yet another book club book I wouldn't have chosen for this reason. But it was an extremely interesting and insightful read and I can definitely recommend it. It's not an easy read and I cried in some places, but there was also some lovely humour in it (such as his encounter with a Yemeni kidnapper).
One thing that came across very strongly was Frank Gardner's deep affection for the Middle East and a sense that this remains in spite of his circumstances. Although it is shocking and sad, there's also something very optimistic too. ... (continue)

Cover of The Good Husband of Zebra Drive
Cover of Timoleon Vieta Come Home
  • Would be four stars but...

I felt little betrayed by the ending. However, it's a beautifully written book with some endearing characters.

Cover of Half of a Yellow Sun
Cover of The Snake Stone
Cover of Watchmen
  • I thought the characters were interesting and I liked the format - skipping between the story, the pirate story, and the clipping/ interviews etc.
It'll be interesting to see the film when it comes out though because I really can't think how it will work.
I don't think it quite deserves the accolades (it's one of Time magazine's 100 greatest novels), but it's a decent enough read, i.e. didn't feel like a waste of time. ... (continue)

Cover of The Reluctant Fundamentalist
Cover of Wolf Brother
  • Well paced and beautifully written

I discovered this through I-tunes but didn't like Ian McKellen's reading of it (I thought he was a bit too quiet and didn't read it with enough variation).
It's a good, well-paced adventure story which should appeal to all ages.
