Miss Piggott Roma, Italy

A un certo punto non sono riuscita ad andare più avanti. Eppure mi stava piacendo, e molto.
Non so come sia potuto succedere.
In genere mi piace leggere libri lunghi, eppure mi è sembrato che questo si dilungasse troppo. probabilmente non ero nel mood adatto.
So per certo che un giorno lo finirò...

Non ce l'ho fatta... nonostante fossi incollata a un divano con una caviglia malandata, non sono riuscita a finirlo.
Più che altro ho trovato irritante lo stile della Gasperini. Non so se fosse un tentativo dell'epoca di adoperare un linguaggio "giovanilistico", però mi è sembrato stonato. "Orco Budda" a destra e a manca, per esempio... Sono atea e nemmeno troppo politicamente corretta ma mi sembra comunque di pessimo gusto.
E poi il continuo calcare la mano sul ribellismo di Rosso e sull'ipocrisia della sua famiglia: ho avuto l'impressione che i personaggi fossero immobili, incapaci di migliorarsi, di crescere, fissati lì dalle parole dell'autrice...
Non so, mi ha infastidito indicibilmente.
Mi è sembrato un quadro troppo facile di un qualunque paesino borghese italiano.
Ma forse quando è stato scritto aveva il suo perchè...
Sarà che questo libro ha cominciato a invecchiare, e a invecchiare male?

It rarely happens to me, but I had to give up on this book. It took 1 week to read 66 pages... I simply couldn't do it.
I couldn't appreciate Annie Proulx's prose, with sentences like the following:
"Then, at a meeting, Petal Bear. Thin, moist, hot. Winked at him. (...) Grey eyes close together, curly hair the color of oak."
Perhaps it is because I'm not a native English speaker, but this style really irritated me, together with the name of the characters, and the plot that after 66 pages seems not to start yet...

I tried to read this book, since The prince of tides is one of those movies I always watch and that always makes me cry... Several American bookcrossers had also told me it is one of their favourite books, but I couldn't get into this novel.
When I eventually got to page 100 I realized it was taking too long to the author to tell his story. And I couldn't stand the tone he used when talking about Rome, the Romans and Italy in general. It is clear he loved Rome but in the book there is too much of what foreigners (and Americans especially) want to read about Italy - which is not exactly the truth but a stereotype most of the times... I'm afraid this goes with all those books written by Americans about Italy, like those by Adriana Trigiani.
And I'm not the target reader of these novels. :-/
