it only took me long to read this book because i was busy with work: once i had a bit more time, i read it very quickly and i liked it very much. it is not what i usually read, but i liked this portrait of a dystopian South Africa - it is fictional, but somehow it doesn't look like it's so far away from our world today, with all the talk about giant firewalls in the EU and governments trying to regulate the internet and technology, riots here and there, on both sides of the Mediterranean.
i think it's a good book also for those who don't usually read science-fiction, or should i say cyberpunk?? umm i am no expert! however, labels don't matter, what matters is that it deals with a series of issues that we should all be a little more aware of. it's a gripping story, and it makes you think, and i think this makes it a good book.

J'ai bien aimé ce livre. C'est une très bonne histoire, dans le sens le plus traditionnel de ce terme, c'est le genre de livre qu'on a toujours envie de lire, c'est pourquoi je suis contente de l'avoir lu en vacances.

J'ai bien aimé ce livre. C'est une très bonne histoire, dans le sens le plus traditionnel de ce terme, c'est le genre de livre qu'on a toujours envie de lire, c'est pourquoi je suis contente de l'avoir lu en vacances.
Il s'agit ici d'un véritable jeu de poupées russes et métahistoires, les différents niveaux de la narration se melent et entre-melent, mais presque jamais je n'ai perdu le fil de l'histoire. Les personnages sont bien dessinés - pas tous, mais beaucoup d'entre eux - et parfois très tragique. Je dirais qu'il s'agit d'une histoire parfois très tragique, je trouve que c'est un livre génial, mais aussi un livre très triste. L'atmosphère est bien créé dans cette Barcelone très sombre et pleine de mystères.
C'est un livre qui nous raconte de la nature humaine, de passions et de tragédie, de l'Histoire qui s'entremelent dans la vie des gens. Très bon livre, très bonne histoire qui séduit le lecteur.

bel libro, probabilmente ha sofferto dell'essere stato letto con poco tempo a disposizione, quindi in modo frammentato e un po' distratto. in realtà sarebbero tre stellette e mezzo.

bel libro, probabilmente ha sofferto dell'essere stato letto con poco tempo a disposizione, quindi in modo frammentato e un po' distratto. in realtà sarebbero tre stellette e mezzo.
un romanzo di atmosfera, dove in realtà succede molto poco, e molti personaggi raccontano storie che si svolgono altrove, o in un altro momento dal presente, mi ha affascinato molto. penso che l'autore abbia reso molto bene l'idea di come ci si potesse sentire sulle Ande in quel periodo, con lo spauracchio costante dei "terrucos" di Sendero Luminoso a rendere la vita, in una zona così remota e vuota di cose da fare e modi per occupare la mente, molto simile a un deserto dei tartari, con i senderisti che stanno sempre per arrivare e non arrivano mai, e questo crea una tensione di fondo. belle anche le parti dove si parla delle storie dei diversi personaggi, onirica e triste quella di Pedrito, avvincente quella dell'albino, mi hanno annoiato invece i racconti su Mercedes.
mi è stato simpatico il personaggio del tenente Lituma, penso che cercherò gli altri romanzi con lui! e penso che leggerò altri romanzi di questo Vargas Llosa meno urbano, rende molto bene l'atmosfera rarefatta delle Ande, almeno per me che non ci sono mai stata e sarei curiosa di andarci.

this was sometimes a hard read. especially at first the language influenced my opinion of the book, which is on the whole rather interesting. i think, though, that it could have been shorter, especially in the middle part, and sometimes the main character's monologues get to me, they're too long.
i suppose one of the problem is also that - obviously, due to the "rudeboy" topic, there's waaay to much testosterone in this book for me, topic-wise and also in the way people and things are described, so sometimes that put me off reading too and that's why it took me more than my average week to read it.

set in the 1950s in the US, it's mainly set on an island which hosts a psychiatric hospital for patients who have committed violent offences. i won't write much about the story because i don't want to spoil it, just trust me on this: if it is a gripping read that you're looking for, read this novel. the author creates a very, very dark and gloomy atmosphere, and he makes it very easy to paint pictures in your mind about what being on the island could feel like. it's a great story, told well, with an interesting setting. dark, gritty, gripping. what more can you want from a thriller?

comunque. ottimo noir, ti acchiappa, non hai voglia di smettere di leggerlo, storia avvincente e ben raccontata, con una struttura su due piani temporali che seguono due gruppi di personaggi diversi. spesso quando cambiava l'ambientazione mi trovavo a pensare nooo ma dai devo sapere cosa succede! quindi insomma, direi che è proprio avvincente.
si parla dei lati oscuri dell'Italia, quelli che non si capisce se esistono e se esistono chi li controlla, sette, servizi segreti deviati e non, poliziotti stanchi, poliziotti idealisti e poliziotti arrivisti, con intorno umanità assortita, generalmente un po' messa male. che dire. io in realtà sono un'ottimista, ma libri così scuri a me piacciono un sacco. se fosse un film, sarebbe diretto da David Fincher.

Hmm, niente male, inizia bene ma poi si perde un po', secondo me.
Prima metà ambientata in una Italia pre-fascista e poi fascista, nel nord ovest del paese, racconta le lotte socialiste e anarchiche, e tutto il mondo in cui le due forze politiche si combattevano nelle campagne italiane. Questa parte mi è piaciuta. Il protagonista poi parte per la Spagna, dove continua la sua attività politica, e il libro continua fino a poi gli anni 30, con guerra civile e tutto il resto. Che dire, mi è piaciuto il libro, ma l'ultima parte... pesaaaante! Pesante, greve, si perde nei dettagli della battaglia e alla fine è sempre un po' uguale a se stesso, ahimè! Però sono contenta di averlo letto, ne avevo sentito parlare un po'. Lo consiglio solo ai veri appassionati di storia, tuttavia. Altrimenti, pesantino.

Not bad. I liked it, just found it a little slow occasionally, but all in all I liked it for the portrayal of 1930s rural England, which it did very well. The characters are also interesting, showing two bohemians - one of which is also a 'bolshevik', to use a term from back then - and their kids, on the one hand and a cast of working class characters, on the other. I liked how the author manages to really create a feeling of heavy summer in some of the pages, with her descriptions of nature. She does that so well that you actually feel transported to it. It's an OK novel, I found it through bookcrossing.

Ottima storia, si legge bene, dato che mi ha tenuto compagnia in giorni di febbre direi che è decisamente avvincente. Come sempre, quel che mi piace dei libri su Santovito&co. E' l'atmosfera che si crea (più si va indietro nel tempo, e più mi piace, fondamentalmente) nonché l'uso del linguaggio, che è caratteristico e colorito e, probabilmente, contribuisce a creare l'atmosfera di cui sopra. Niente male anche la struttura temporale, specie nella prima parte quando si salta in continuazione tra 1800 e 1900. Bello, da leggere, decisamente, se cercate una bella storia, suggestiva e affascinante
