This book is not for anyone who cannot wade through chapters full of factual description of French Revolution era France. Victor Hugo wrote a wonderful story that is as relevant today as it was when he wrote it. Jean ValJean, the hero , steals a loaf of bread to feed his sister and her many children and gets put in the French prison for it. He emerges a hardened criminal but quickly changes into a good hearted man who creates a thriving business, hires a woman who would not otherwise have been hired and adopts a child as his own, all the while being chased by Javert, a police officer that doesn't believe people come in shades of gray. If you can wade through all the description and Romanticism I highly recommend this book. It's one of my all time favorites
