(continue)

Living with all the political correctness of 2011, it is hard to imgaine what it was like in the 60s. The author, Kathryn Stockett attempts to show a slice of life back then, when it was unthinkable that blacks and whites can share washrooms, libraries and doctors, let along a table during a meal.
The intricate connection between the maids and the families they work for is even more dichotomous. They may care for and even love one another as family, but there were rigid social boundaries that no one dared to question, until a brave and spirited young Skeeter came along.
It's the interesting relationships between these women that make The Help so alluring. At a time where women are valued by their housekeeping skills and their husbands' status, it is definitely uplifting to see a character like Skeeter, who with the help from the braver and wiser Aibileen, challenging the status quo and inspiring changes, for better or worse. And the loud-mouth, strong Minny is by no means a one-dimesional character. Underneath the hard shell, we get to see her vulnerability, which adds more weights to her sacrafice.
It's a topic that may seem dated, at a time when we have an Afrcan-American as the most powerful political leader in the world, but just like the housewives that started questioning how they treated their maids, the book make the readers examine our attitudes toward a less advantaged minority, as racism turns to a more subconscious, hidden issue. Of course, a white person's point of view may not be the whole picture and may be even a little controversial, but starting a discussion about an important issue, in my opinion, is always a good thing.
