I would've given Dark Prince 3 1/2 stars if there was half stars. This I would've give 4 1/2 because it was really good. I liked the main characters a lot whereas with the Dark Prince, I like the secondary characters and the story of the Carpathians vs Vampires.
This one has a human woman dealing with being half human/ half something she doesn't know but has a little introduction from her mother's journal. She thinks she has a blood disease with need of regular transfusions. She has become a renowned surgeon while studying her "disease" and is trying to cure it.
She gets a mental link, that she thinks is a dream, not reality. When some crazy Vampire hunters start hunting her, she runs to her father's homeland and the mental link becomes very strong.
The man is the mental link and has been tortured and buried alive. He is half mad and doesn't know who he is calling to and bringing to him. He thinks it may be a betrayer. He can remember nothing of the past, just pain.
That is the beginning and premise. It is a Carpathian novel of lifemates find one another. I don't really think you need the first book to understand what is going on. It gets explained well enough but you will miss who the people are later in the novel. It is not necessary, but it'll make you want to read the first book which is not as good.
