Weaver is the most important american translator of italian literature. He has translated all the best-known italian writers, and some say that being translated by him means to have the possibility to become a bestseller in the USA.
Here he remembers his roman life in the late 40s and in the 50s, and tells the story of his encounters and friendships with Elsa Morante, Alberto Moravia, Ignazio Silone and others. It's a sort of intellectual amarcord of one of the brightest seasons of italian culture. The book contains an introductory memoir by the author and seven pieces - translated into english - by seven italian writers. It's an occasion - to the english speaking people - to read excerts of Gadda's Pasticciaccio and of Morante's House of Liars.
