The work I liked the most was Melmoch Reconciled. Although, I loved the preface too. In Melmoch, the hero is a very ordinary man that kind of wins a “supernatural lottery” and is granted all his wishes at the moment he states them. The only thing he cannot wish is to die, and it ends up being the only thing he truly wants. Balzac is a master when it comes to describe human nature, and these two stories at least are texts that everyone should read at some point in life.

Me obligaron a leerlo. De cabo a rabo. Y encima, tuve que escribir un informe sobre él. ¿Me acuerdo de algo? No estoy segura. A veces se me viene una frase o una idea a la mente, pero creo que para lo que más sirvió es para estar convencida de que la lectura es un placer íntimo y personal; que se pierde totalmente cuando a uno le obligan a hacer algo que no quiere.

En esta novela fantástica todos están muertos. No nos damos cuenta al principio, pero comenzamos a intuirlo muy pronto. Los personajes no lo saben, pero están muertos. Languidecen, estan absortos en ese mundo que los estresa y los angustia. Juan Rulfo es un maestro de crear ambientes y hacerte vivirlos. Leer esta novela es sumergirse en lo sobrenatural. Un viaje de los buenos, sin necesidad de inyectarse nada.

Lo maravilloso de este libro es que cualquiera puede leerlo. Es interesante, apasionante, y tiene tantos ingredientes, que todos pueden aprovechar mucho de él. Yo lo leí completo, sin hacer trampa cuando era una pre-adolescente; y no se me olvidan muchos detalles que me enseñaron tantas cosas. Es un retrato de la sociedad, de la cultura, del sufrimiento de los pobres, de la avaricia, de la naturaleza humana. Es una maravilla de novela que me encantó aún cuando no estaba preparada intelectualmente para absorber todo lo que ofrecía.

Largo, largo, laaaaaaaaaaaaargoooooo! Eso es todo lo que tengo que decir (diría Forrest Gump). Dios mío! Qué libro tan largo. Sin embargo tiene algunas partes entretenidas. Este es uno de los que suelo dejar en remojo por mucho tiempo, a ver si en otros momentos de mi vida me siento mejor para leerlo. Trata de un levantamiento belicoso de algunos campesinos (que se llaman los chuanes), y de las aventuras y desventuras de los amores contrariados entre las niñas de bien, y esos peludos y arrastrados alzados en armas.... nada nuevo.

OMG! Every time I read this book I discover a new universe. This time it is about love and relationships. How good is this book! I love it!

This is the story of a young, innocent and extremely good looking boy who takes a job as a sitter for a famous painter. When a picture of him is finished, he looks at it with sorrow and wishes not to be ugly or old and have the man in the picture grow older instead of himself. Somehow his wish is granted. Years pass and the boy never ages, but the man in the picture does. Before long, the boy realizes that not only he is always as young as 19, but also that he has lost his soul in the process: he is unable of any feeling of love, sadness or joy. He has became in sum an empty and beautiful canvas. The story is so well written that in some parts the reader feels like a spectator of what is happening. The dialogues, the settings, the descriptions of the exterior and the interior of the characters is wonderful I am never tired of reading it.
