Work in progress

I always thought a four-range rating system to be incomplete: a fifth star is needed to mark masterworks.
This novel definitely gets five stars, as far as I'm concerned.
And I don't care what other people say, to me DeLillo is better than both Pynchon and Wallace.

A poche pagine dall'inizio, sono già molte le frasi memorabili... Non a caso le note a margine su questo libro abbondano.
I pezzi sono molto brevi, e spesso l'approfondimento degli argomenti è volutamente limitato. Ma questo formato rende il libro un'ideale lettura da viaggio (in questi giorn ... (continue)

A poche pagine dall'inizio, sono già molte le frasi memorabili... Non a caso le note a margine su questo libro abbondano.
I pezzi sono molto brevi, e spesso l'approfondimento degli argomenti è volutamente limitato. Ma questo formato rende il libro un'ideale lettura da viaggio (in questi giorni lo porto sempre con me), com'è nella natura di un blog quotidiano.
Inoltre Saramago ritorna a volte sugli stessi argomenti, o approfitta di un nuovo spunto per trattare lo stesso tema; come succede nelle riflessioni quotidiane di molti.

I chanced upon this in the library catalogue of my department at uni & thought 'nice, something by Paul to read on the train'.
Collected non-fiction pieces from NY papers & magazines. Some of them must have already passed through my hands in some other form as I was already familiar with them; but since there are admittedly only 2500 copies of it around, I'm going to make a list of what you're missing.
Answer to a Question from New York Magazine (1995)
The question being, presumably, "What first comes to your mind when New York is mentioned to you?"
This is only a paragraph, but quite funny. An episode from Auster's childhood.
Why Write? (1995)
Five episodes back & forth from Auster's life.
The answer being, presumably, that otherwise these episodes would go untold. And you wouldn't want to miss them.
"It reminds me of something that once happened to my mother..." (1983)
A recollection of Auster's meeting with Charles Reznikoff in 1974. As is always the case with Paul, the episode is filled with coincidences (his wedding day, an article he had written about Reznikoff, his first book of poetry...)
Quite touching.
Twenty-Five Sentences Containing the Words Charles Bernstein (1990)
This is the funniest introductory whatever I've ever read--or heard, for that matter. Auster manages to be obnoxiusly funny, complimentary and profound all at once.

... To save Mumia Abu-Jamal's life. Paul is more socially involved than one would think.
This souldn't even be termed a book, it's that brief. But all the pieces are very good & my vote is given in proportion to the length. And none of you is going to ever read it, anyway.

Las ballenas ya lo saben

Sono venuto per le balene & sono rimasto per il paesaggio.
Ovvero: inizialmente è stato il titolo ad attirarmi (chi non ama le balene?! oltretutto io sono uno di quelli che "apre Moby Dick come fosse l'I-Ching", come diceva un altro utente); ma una breve occhiata è bastata a capire che si tratta d ... (continue)

Sono venuto per le balene & sono rimasto per il paesaggio.
Ovvero: inizialmente è stato il titolo ad attirarmi (chi non ama le balene?! oltretutto io sono uno di quelli che "apre Moby Dick come fosse l'I-Ching", come diceva un altro utente); ma una breve occhiata è bastata a capire che si tratta di un libro di viaggi nella Baja California, e a quel punto sono stato stuzzicato forse anche di più (le Americhe sono il mio ambito di studi).
Cacucci ha attraversato la California messicana, da sotto in sù anziché secondo la più popolare direzione nord-sud.
Nella migliore tradizione epica l'incipit è in medias res (che qui significa, ça va sans dire, a metà penisola...), e ci troviamo subito in compagnia delle balene grigie, che nelle baie della Baja vengono a partorire tutti gli anni.
E tornano spesso anche nelle pagine del libro, per la gioia del sottoscritto.
Con il secondo capitolo torniamo all'inizio del viaggio, & alle sue ragioni.
Cacucci alterna efficacemente il resoconto dei luoghi visitati con gli aneddoti che i suoi anni messicani gli hanno lasciato; come volesse riprodurre i tempi della Dodge Durango, e riempire le pause nel viaggio con i suoi racconti.
Ne ha un numero impressionante, di aneddoti da raccontare, & non proverò nemmeno a menzionarne alcuni perché sarebbe riduttivo. Molti sono davvero stupefacenti.
Inoltre è chiaro che Cacucci, con la barba brizzolata e il gilet da professional traveler, è innamorato del Messico, & le occasioni in cui può bearsi di non essere uno yanqui sono impagabili.
Leggetelo, sù.
