《竹书纪年》原本据说有三十篇，记载夏、商、西周、春秋、战国的史事，其中从周幽王开始用晋国来纪年，三家分晋后用魏国纪年，魏襄王二十年便滑再纪下去。《竹书纪年》是战国时魏国的史书，晋武帝太康二年（公元二八一年）在汲郡（治所在今河南汲县西南）的一座古墓里出土。这部史书书写在竹简上，被称为《竹书》；由于它按年编次，又被称为《纪年》。有时还冠上出土的地点，被称为《汲冢竹书》或《汲冢纪年》。一般称为《竹书纪年
