本書作者當年曾參加抗震救災工作，親眼見證了這段歷史。大量真實的史料、大批珍貴的歷史圖片以及作者深沉的反思與追問，使本書成為報告文學的經典之作。本書曾獲中國優秀報告文學獎，亦獲香港教育署節選為中學中國語文科的教材，同時是長期獲香港中學選為中學生閱讀報告文學的推介用書的極少數讀物之一。美國康奈爾大學、賓夕法尼亞大學等都將此書列為中國文學閱讀作品。

再看<唐山大地震>, 還是被深深感動. 當中有很多感人的故事, 偉大的事跡, 捨己為人的精神, 每每叫人感動落淚. 現今很多香港人都看不起中國人, 覺得他們文化低, 對他們的態度不是很禮貌, 其實他們過去的經歷, 我們身處香港真正無法想像.
日本發生大地震, 人人都盛讚日本人有禮, 其實中國人雖然文化底, 人不是很禮貌, 心卻是很善良, 很有情味的.
當最壞事情發生, 人性總是發揮它最美善的一面, 令我不無感慨, 如果人性的美好, 可以持續發揮, 那麼世界便美麗多了.

a classic it will be and surely reading it after the Sichuan earthquake, will be more impressive.

..I guess I read it thrice. sad to know the catastrophe - grateful to the reporter, yet grievous by knowing the bureaucracy underlied..
