本書作者亞瑟•丹托（Arthur C. Danto）是美國當代哲學家兼藝評家，現任哥倫比亞大學教授，他就是這麼一位強烈主張終結論的後現代主義理論家，其於1984年發表論文〈藝術終結〉（The End of Art），宣稱藝術歷史告終，或更確切的說，指的是大型論述或藝術進化觀的終結，此爭議性命題一出，自然引發諸多熱烈討論。本書主要架構源自作者於1995年春天，受邀至華盛頓梅倫講座的講稿，除了對先前「藝術終結」的概念作進一步延伸和說明外，作者更以此帶出當代藝術發展的種種現況，剖釋藝術歷史結束和創作之間的互動關係，因此「藝術終結」的概念不可謂不是了解全書的一把鑰匙。
