I read the first book, "The Summer before the Dark" when I was out for the National Day holiday. The story is very short, and around the housewife Kate, around her "going out alone", as well as a trip for thought.
She has a perfect family, and looks of envy. However, since more than 20 years after her marriage with her husband, obviously she hardly can feel love between herself and he husband as original, that is, she is not needed by her husband; her children have begun to grow gradually, and become independent, that is, she is not needed by her children; she becomes dispensable, with a sense of not being needed intensively, which forces her to re-examine herself, however, confusion follows.
She thinks she would find herself from the work, when she re-integrates into the society, however, the work does not bring her satisfaction, even she get so much compliments from others; she imagines to be like her friend Mary, and finds herself by just letting herself indulgent, however, the result remains nothing; she search for the answer from the 19-year-old Maureen: It is was wrong for the original choice to get married? But the problem seems not important, because, for the previous 20 years she has been of envy sound around.
In the end, Kate chooses to return.
I guess the author would like to say that we can never find ourselves from the outside world, and self is only the illusion of ourselves, and the faith with it. In other words, this story seems to have explained the words "God blessed the stupid woman more", for they don’t want to think and search for themselves.
第一本书《天黑前的夏天》是在国庆假期出去玩的时候看的，故事很短。故事围绕着家庭主妇凯特的一次“独自外出”，更是她思想的一次单独旅行。
她有着完美的家庭，看起来令人羡慕。但是结婚20余年之后，她分明难以感受到当初的爱情，她不被老公需要；孩子也渐渐开始长大，变得独立，她不被孩子需要，自己变得可有可无，一种强烈的不被需要感，迫使她去重新审视自己，迷茫随之而来。
本来以为重新融入社会，可以从工作中找到自己，但是工作的被认可并不能带来满足感；她想象自己像她的朋友玛丽一样放任自己来寻找自我，结果仍然一无所获；她从19岁的莫琳身上寻找答案：是不是当初的选择是错的？可是这个问题并不重要，前面的20年她可是在羡慕声中度过。
最后凯特选择了回归。
我猜想作者想说我们根本没有办法从外界找到自我，自我只是我们自己的幻想与对这个幻想的信仰而言。换个角度，故事似乎也解释了“女人笨一点比较幸福”，因为她们不去思考，不去寻找自我。
