《平家物語》是12世紀鎌倉時代的軍紀物語，描述平安晚期兩大武士集團源氏和平氏興衰的歷史。原稱《平曲》，又稱《平家琵琶曲》，為盲藝人以琵琶伴奏演唱的臺本，只有3卷，後經說書藝人傳唱、補充，加上文人校勘 、編寫，約在1201?1221年初步形成今傳的13卷本。故事主要?述以平清盛為首的平氏家族的故事。按內容可分為兩大部分。一為描寫平氏家族的榮華鼎盛；一為描述源平兩大武士集團爭戰的經過，渲染了平氏家族終被消滅的悲慘結局。
宮尾登美子忠實呈現史實，卻又以其獨特細膩的女性視角，一反過去史家對平家大肆撻伐的慣例，強調了平清盛維持家族興盛的心路歷程及苦心經營，並為身處亂世、命運由人的女性發聲，訴說了當時各階層女性的無奈與曲折心境。
．原作甫出版，便被選中改編為2005年NHK大河劇〈義經〉，由瀧澤秀明等領銜演出。
