Book Description

this is a clear introductory book for readers who want to catch French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu's central concepts. the author first compares the different theoretical approaches between Bourdieu and Marx and Weber. Yet he argues that Bourdieu combines the insights from Durhkeim's social fact, Marx's social classes and domination, and Weber's classes and legitimacy. the chapters give fine discussions and examples of his concepts, such as field, habitus, distinction, various capitals, and how they work in social reproduction. the book give me a sharp view to re-think the role of family, school, and everyday life (e.g., movies, books, music that we "enjoy") plays in the process of class formation and internalization of these habitus and cultures.
