文本是一段壓縮的歷史，歷史是一個延伸的文本。
《四庫全書》館臣閱讀文本時，通過歷史理解，釋放文本被壓縮的世界；館臣述評文本時，通過〈提要〉書寫，重新壓縮歷史。所有的歷史理解，都不免介入現實生活的經驗、期待與想像；被構築的歷史圖像，應該是現實生活世界中的某種隱喻。
本書以《四庫全書》纂修成果─《總目》為研究對象，以「詩文評類」為主要範圍，探述《總目》的文學思想。至於觀看《總目》的方式，就以權力、知識和文學批評史的關係為視角，捕捉瞬間流動的歷史光影。
