Book Description
主角是一位自稱田村卡夫卡的少年。他四歲時，母親帶著養女出走。年幼的卡夫卡根本不記得母親的樣子，連名字也不知道。卡夫卡在十五歲生日前離家出走四國，為的是逃避父親所作的預言：你將弒父，將與母親、姊姊交合。卡夫卡抵達四國後棲身於甲村家私立圖書館。館長佐伯女士是位四十多歲的婦人，有著神秘的身世。卡夫卡懷疑佐伯是自己的生母，她卻對此不置可否。及後卡夫卡戀上了佐伯，並與之發生肉體關係。
小說還有一條副線，以老人中田為主角，他在小學時經歷一次神秘的昏迷事件後，便喪失所有記憶，甚至不會認字計數，但卻獲得了與貓對話的神秘能力。中田在一次神智失控的情況下殺死了一個紳士裝扮的殺貓狂人Johnnie WContinue
