琵琶是中国最具代表性的弹拨乐器，古之曰“枇杷”（批把）即“琵琶”。它的名称是因它的演秦手法而命名——东汉刘熙《释名·释乐器》中记载：“枇杷本出胡中，马上所鼓也。推手前曰‘琵’（向外弹弦），引手却曰‘琵’（向内挑弦），象其鼓时，因以为名也。”在秦汉到唐一段时期，琵琶两字曾作为多种弹拨乐器的总称。
