1935年，青年学子季羡林赴德留学，开始了十年羁旅生涯。数十年后，学术泰斗季先生已近耄耋之年，忆及往昔，遂写下一部《留德十年》。不书讯时间的脉络，记述了先生当年抛家傍路赴德求学德经过。在赫赫有名的哥廷根大学，先生几经辗转选定印度学为主修方向，遂对其倾注热情与辛劳，最终获得博士学位，也由此奠定了毕生学术研究的深厚根基。在此过程中，先生饱尝了第二次世界大战的阴霾带来的戏剧性苦难，而于苦难之外，又更难忘学长深思，友人情深。先生虽言“自传”只述事实，不及其余，然“诗与真”并行不悖，洋洋十数万言，生命之诗性本已蕴集期间。
