本書藉由歷史所見說明真理的意涵，然其所論並非史上的真理論述而是真理在史上的呈現；因歷史既包含所有人事，歷史所見的真理其實是人所能知的終極真相。為證明與說明真理的體系，真理論述的架構必由上而下展現，也就是由上帝存在的問題入手，故本書前部目次依序為上帝、神意、真理、靈魂、生命、求道、道德、美感諸題；後部則就學術的範疇論述，分別檢討宗教、知識觀、哲學、史學、科學等領域在真理追求上的得失，並藉此驗證前部論述的通貫性與一致性。《真理論述》論述真理，真理涵蓋一切，真理論述亦概括一切，然概括一切若非不可能，即必失於粗略，但論述粗略而無錯誤則可謂為要義，這與其說是由於人的缺陷，不如說是出於道的偉大。
