  Slapstick, not wit... blah

  I read HHGG many years ago, but never got around to Mostly Harmless when it came out. I saw it at the library the other day, and knew I had a quest to finish. Unfortunate.

  I read HHGG many years ago, but never got around to Mostly Harmless when it came out. I saw it at the library the other day, and knew I had a quest to finish. Unfortunate.

  Instead of the cutting wit of the first stories, we get Jerry Lewis-esque slapstick, and Dr Seuss-like silly word play. The plot rambles and bumbles, but unlike the comedic diversions of its predecessors MH just fades away into more nothingness.

  MH gives us a smile here and a chuckle there, but after a short period of time I simply won't remember anything in particular about Book 5 - with the possible exception of the ending. That was a surprise.

  It's pretty much all down to the two main characters (Arthur / Ford) in this last book of the series. Here the mood and tone of the story takes a turn for the darker side. The story is no longer filled to the brim with strange and new ideas / people every other line, but I kind of like how it takes an idea and spend "time" with it. At least it adds more weight to the gravity of this book. Be warned, it's a dark ending for a otherwise hilarious comedy. As the Mk II suggests, PANIC.

  Douglas Adams had an amazing and clever mind, but honestly? Stick with the first 2 books of the series, which are seriously awesome. This one has good parts, but it's nothing like the others. It really takes a nerd like me to finish the series.

  If you loved (as I did) "The hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy"'s trilogy in four parts, you will probably be a little disappointed by this almost pointless fifth chapter.

  If you loved (as I did) "The hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy"'s trilogy in four parts, you will probably be a little disappointed by this almost pointless fifth chapter.
  Parallel universes are always tricky stuff, and Douglas manages to make them even more disorientating to the reader.
  All in all a nice book, with a brilliant cameo role of Elvis.
