    I avoided reading this novel since high school, as I thought it sounded tremendously boring. In the same way that people who have never really had to do much public speaking work up an irrational fear of it because of others' fear of it, I feared this novel would be a complete snorefest and kept my distance. As an English major in undergrad, it finally caught up with me in a 19th century British fiction class. To my great and pleasant surprise, I found myself caught up in the timeless, though predictable, "courtship" between Darcy and Elizabeth, but most of all, Austen's clever prose and the hilarious Mr. Bennet. Set your fears aside and take the plunge--it's worth the time.

    This book was recommened to me by Susanna T., an international student from Sweden as one of her favorite books. I haven't read a "classic" in so long I was a little bit skeptical about reading it. I bouth the book about a month or so ago and hadn't had a chance to start it and then my class started and I didn't hae time to read, so I picked up the unabridged audio version.I ended up enjoyinging it. I think it ended up being a good discussion book for the summer. We'll see how the others like it, if they readt. I know that I would never want to live during that time period for the pure fact that women are discriminated against at such a high level.Questions1. How would you describe the Bennett family? Normal? Disfunctional?2. Would you have wanted to live during that time? Why or why not?3. I am not sure that I would have liked living during that time period, as a woman you couldn't really do as you choosed only as your husband or family chose. How would you feel about this? Would you want to stay at home to entertain? What if you were part of a lower class and had to actually work?

Jane Austen (1775-1817) is considered by many scholars to be the first great woman novelist. Her novels revolve around people, not events or coincidences. Miss Austen sets her novels in the upper middle class English country which was her own environment.

Her novels have increased in stature over time. Her skills of writing, including a dry humor and a witty elegance of expression have attracted generations to her work.

Miss Austen completed six novels and part of a seventh, "Sense and Sensibility", "Pride and Prejudice", "Mansfield Park", "Emma", "Northanger Abbey", "Persuasion" and the partial "Lady Susan". Quiet Vision publishes all seven.
