Book Description
This four volume, deluxe paperback boxed set contains J.R.R. Tolkien's epic masterworks THE HOBBIT and the three volumes of THE LORD OF THE RINGS (THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, THE TWO TOWERS, and THE RETURN OF THE KING) in their definitive text settings complete with maps and cover illustrations by the celebrated artist Alan Lee. In THE HOBBIT, Bilbo Baggins is whisked away from his comfortable, unambitious life in Hobbiton by the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves. He finds himself caught up in a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a THE LORD OF THE RINGS tells of the great and dangerous quest undertaken by Frodo Baggins and the Fellowship of the Ring: Gandalf the wizard; the hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam; Gimli the dwarf; Legolas the elf; Boromir of Gondor; and a tall, mysterious stranger called Strider. J.R.R. Tolkien's three volume masterpiece is at once a classic myth and a modern fairy tale -- a story of high and heroic adventure set in the unforgettable landscape of Middle-Earth.

This just wasn't my type of book. I never did get into it as much as other people have sworn they did. I don't understand all of the hype. Oh well. I tried, and I finished it. This one book contains the 3 Tolkein books (minus The Hobbit) that tells the story of The Lord of the Rings. I liked having one huge book to go through, rather than the 3 separate books. I could keep going as I tore through one story into the next.

I like the books so much better than the movie, because the movies cannot give true justice into the world that Tolkein created, or the creatures. In these books, you get to really use your imagination and "see" things through Tolkein's eyes, not just the director of the movie who picked and chose what parts of the story to elaborate on or throw away.
A great classic read for anyone who likes fantasy and adventure!
I'll probably never "finish". I find reading J.R.R.'s masterpiece quite tedious.
Have read all three in high school & have reread the series at least twice.
I had to buy the boxed set when the movies came out. I have very old, very delicate copies of each book from a 1967 printing with the foreward by Peter S. Beagle, but they have been read so often that they are crumbling away.
