Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? was published in 1968. Grim and foreboding, even today it is a masterpiece ahead of its time.
By 2021, the World War had killed millions, driving entire species into extinction and sending mankind off-planet. Those who remained coveted any living creature, and for people who couldn't afford one, companies built incredibly realistic simulacrae: horses, birds, cats, sheep. . .
They even built humans.
Emigrees to Mars received androids so sophisticated it was impossible to tell them from true men or women. Fearful of the havoc these artificial humans could wreak, the government banned them from Earth. But when androids didn't want to be identified, they just blended in.
Rick Deckard was an officially sanctioned bounty hunter whose job was to find rogue androids, and to retire them. But cornered, androids tended to fight back, with deadly results.

    Leggi questo libro perchè hai visto il film - ma sono due cose diverse. Il film è tragicamente lirico, parla di schiavitù, di amore, di ricerca dell'assoluto. Qui c'è il declino, la solitudine di un mondo che muore - leggi questo libro e ti chiedi cosa fa di te un essere umano e che cosa ci vuole prima che decidano di "ritirare" anche quelli come te.
    Bellissimo il concetto che il preooccuparsi di un'altro essere vivente oltre a te stesso ti differenzi dagli androidi...ma allora quanti androidi ci sono nel mondo? Quanti ne conoscete?

    Do androids dream of electric sheeps? questo il vero titolo originale di questo libro di Dick. Al film fornisce solo l'ispirazione, le differenze sono enormi.
    Tra le cose più belle del libro, il rapporto tra umani e animali, cosa che nel film è solo accennata in modo fugace e incomprensibile.

    A bounty hunter paid by the police department has to kill 6 escaped androids in one day. The difficult but monetarily rewarding job, though, turns out to be much more challenging for the protagonist than ever in the past, and makes him start to ask himself questions, and eventually brings him to a kind of mystic experience that will change his life.

    The sci-fi setting and dark atmosphere of this book are just a pretext for the author to talk about profound and interesting questions, such as: what can we consider human nature? Has humanity lost touch with its roots and bound with nature in this age of technology? How important is ecology? And so on.

    And by the way, if you have seen Blade Runner, and think you know everything about this book, you are completely wrong.

    Il confronto con il film di Blade Runner è inevitabile. C'è chi dice che il film sia un capolavoro mentre il libro è così così, ma io non sono d'accordo. Il film riprende uno (e solo uno) dei temi del libro e lo sviluppa a modo suo, spesso discostandosi dalla trama del libro. Quello che ne esce fuori è in effetti un grande film. Ma questo libro, secondo me, non è da meno. I temi sono molteplici e, seppur trattati con meno approfondimento, validi e interessanti. Il "--" del mio voto è solo per la trama, non particolarmente coinvolgente. Qui a farla da padrone sono più che altro le discussioni e le meditazioni, non le azioni. Ma, ad essere sinceri, anche nel film è così. Insomma: libro di cui si raccomanda assolutamente la lettura!

  • Grande Dick e pessime traduzioni. Folgorante per alcune intuizioni sul nostro futuro prossimo, non ha nulla a che spartire col bellissimo film di Scott che lo travisa in maniera geniale, ma è in ogni caso una delle migliori opere di SF.
