Just began, I felt I couldn't stop reading it.
Strikingly clairvoyant, and wonderfully written.

But every time he burnt himself up he sprang out of the ashes, he got himself born all over again. And it looks like we're doing the same thing, over and over, but we've got one damn thing the phoenix never had. We know the damn silly things we've done for a thousand years and as long as we know that and always have it around where we can see it, someday we'll stop making the goddamn funeral pyres and jumping in the middle of them. We pick up a few more people that remember every generation."

This is a fabulous book. I have read it twice and loaned it out many times. I have yet to meet the person who dislikes it.

1984's "soulmate" book

This is one of those books you cannot miss in your life. A visionary, troubling and terribly realistic story about the importance of culture and human exchange. I read almost all of it in the subway and I was creeped out by the image of dull people listening to their earphones...

It's not bad, but also not that good as I anticipated prior reading it. Compared with Zamyatin's We, Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 is a pretty straightforward novel. It's less nuanced in terms of form and characterization. There's less fun, therefore, when I read it since things developed in a way that can be expected anyway. I like the third part, though, when the book becomes fast-paced and
reads like an action-film. That's why I add an extra 0.5 star.
I think Fahrenheit 451 is written in the trajectory of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Both dystopias share with the anxiety over the rise of popular culture and its possible threat to the higher culture. They also underscore the blindness of the multitude, which is exemplified by people's propensity toward hedonism. Whereas Huxley seems more pessimistic when he lets the
Savage drown in the orgy of the frenzied mob, Bradbury seems to be more confident about the integrity of culture since there are still those book-people who aim to guard human civilization in the wilderness.
