Given way too much detail then it really needs. The beginning was fairly interesting, but when I get to the middle of it, it turns out pretty dreadful with all the historical fact and details.
I usually do not like vampire stories, but this is a completely different kind. The historical and scholarly aspect is fascinating. Pick up this book if you are in the mood for something smart!
creepy in an enjoyable way.
Creepy, cruel, romantic, mysterious, heart-warming, historical, worth reading twice +.
I bought this book used, for reading on a flight from Philadelphia to London. It turned out to be a great idea, since I had never had such an enjoyable trip. It's not the best book in the world, but the story is interesting and the variety in writing style keeps things fresh, despite how long it is.
In a way, it's too long.
I'm not sure how many stars to give this book. The first third of the book, while well written, was poorly paced. This is a book about Dracula, it should be gripping! The first third of the book is not. I have heard that this author spent about 10 years writing this book. I can believe that after reading it because the author seems to grow as the book progresses. Once we get to around the halfway point she has dramatically improved her pacing of the story and we finally have our gripping read. 3 stars for the first third of the book, 5 stars for the rest.

This is actually the second time I've read this book. For a first novel, it is outstanding. I was completely engrossed in the story. I really love history and the whole Dracula lore. I thought it was a great mix of both. It added a lot of suspense that made me read it with the lights on. I think I read it in about four days, I just couldn't put it down. I will say this though, if you are not really into history or researching, I would skip it. If you are wanting to read it just because it has to do with Dracula, I would pick a much smaller book. However, I just love history and research (duh, I work in a library) so it was right up my alley. Actually, I'm doing a little research on it myself. I did read some of the comments on Amazon.com and wasn't exactly surprised by the comments. It was either a "love it" or "hate it" book. That is why I throw my caution out there. Basically, people who didn't enjoy it were out for a Dracula story and thought the history was "a drag". I'm really into history so I thought it was pretty damn good. I will say I did discover a few historical inaccuracies, but I think I'll let them fly for now. ;) All in all, a good read, especially for a rainy day.
In the same school of a historical/art/thriller as Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, but is a better book. I actually quite like the "evil character" (the antagonist of the book), and food for though on what is the importance of collecting knowledge.
