    Afraid it's not for me...

    While I laud the technical skill, the creativity and the deep historical research... it didn't work for me. I am moderately interested in comics, and maybe this is the problem?

    While I laud the technical skill, the creativity and the deep historical research... it didn't work for me. I am moderately interested in comics, and maybe this is the problem?

    I got some of the references, but I also suppose that the book wasn't written for comics historians only. And yet, if you don't take in account this angle (it's maybe the first time that literature - in the sense of books - gives homage to comics, instead of the other way around, or at least I never heard of anything similar before) what you get is one more story of a group of quirky guys (and gals) in a large American metropolis, dealing with their own quirkiness, coming of age, ghosts and secrets.

    They are also Jews, or most of them are, anyway.

    For quirky Jews, I prefer Mordercai Richler. For comics, I tend(ed) to prefer Moore. I will probably try another book from the same author, sooner or later, but I am afraid this was a bit of a dud, for me.

    Even if I did not love this book for being a historical novel that provides an in depth look at the origons of comic books in America, of being Jewish in America before, during, and after World War II, and the relationship between fathers and sons, I would have loved it for its insightful writing on ...   • A thoroughly fun journey in the, previously unknown to me, world of comics, thanks mainly to the two likeable main characters as they proceed through life. Even in sadness and through difficult moments, it was still fun to read.

Joe Kavalier's family managed to get him out of Germany before the more serious persecution of Jews began, and his dream was to bring, first his brother Thomas, and eventually his entire family to the United States to join him. We follow the comic-writing careers and the personal lives of both men. It is a serious book, subtle humor creeps in as well.
