This is a beautiful novel about a predominately native community living in Alberta. The narrative which Thomas King creates is often lighthearted and humorous; and yet, at the same time, deals with some pretty dark stuff. The community seems to always be caught between being unified and functional, and being torn apart by violence, alcoholism, absent families, and crime. Overall, I think the novel has a fairly optimistic view of community (or perhaps bittersweet); this is particularly conveyed through the humorous narration. However, it is also true that by the end of the novel the protagonist is alone on Christmas, reaching for any connection he can find. A great novel nonetheless. Recommended.
