白先勇在人物形象上的塑造上有一個極為引人注目的特徵，那就是把比較抽象和深奧的有關人和人性的命題化解為時空兩度，於是也就化解成了活生生的人生命題，因為人性的時空形態也就是展開了的人生形態。「臺北人」中的人物，在時間上幾乎都有沉重的今昔之比、年華之嘆，在空間上幾乎都從大陸遷移而來，隔岸遙想，煙波浩淼。於是，時間上的滄桑感和空間上的飄泊感加在一起，組成了這群臺北人的雙重人生幅度，悠悠的厚味和深遂的哲思就從這雙重人生幅度中滲發出來。有的作家也能排除「非人」的干擾而逼視人的命題，卻往往陷入一種玄學式的滯塞，白先勇打破了這種滯塞，把自己的人物推入背景開闊的人生長旅，於是全盤皆活。只有在人生長旅中，那些有關人的生命形態的盈縮消長、靈肉搏鬥、兩性覬覦、善惡互溶、客我分離、輩分遞嬗，乃至帶有終極性的生死宿命等等大題目才會以感性形式呈現得切實、豐富和強烈，讓所有的讀者都能毫無抵拒地投入品味。白先勇又不輕易地給這種品味以裁判性的引導，不讓某種絕對標準來凌駕於「真實的人生」之上，這又進一步保全了人的命題的恢宏度和無限的可能性，使文學的人可以用自己獨特的面貌與哲學的人對峙並存。
