Maybe having a vampire for a boyfriend isn't such a bright idea.

  • Dead Until Dark Dead Until Dark

I hate to pick up a book with great anticipation only to be totally disappointed all the way through. To be fair and truthful, I admit that I have not seen a single episode of True Blood on HBO. Or perhaps the problem is that I was expecting somethin ... (read full critics)

  • Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris - Review by Waterstone's Books Quarterly Online

Sookie Stackhouse mostly keeps herself to herself. But when she meets Bill, sparks fly. Sookie can read minds, but with Bill she has met her ideal man; she hears only silence. But there’s trouble: he’s a vampire, and her town harbours a serial killer ... (read full critics)

HBO's True Blood is funnier, wittier, sexier, better in any sense than the books it's inspired from. But the books are an easy and entertaining reading nonetheless.

I read this after watching the series (unfortunately) but I still loved it. Charlaine Harris has really managed to capture a mysterious beauty in all of the main characters.

  • Actually, "vampire" is not the topic that I am interested in. But I have to say, this book is really nice!

The words that author used in the book was not difficult, and I can image the picture of the story by author's writing. I am going to read more series about this book.

  • Ten times better than Twilight...

I haven't watched any episodes of True Blood so this was completely new to me and wow I loved it! Twilight pales in comparison. This is a much more exciting love story with a lot more to the characters than Twilight. Maybe because its aimed at slightly older readers.

Sookie is a fantastic character and I really love Bill, he's so much more appealing than Edward! Enough comparisons with Twilight though as this is so much better there isn't even anything worth comparing. The vampires are as vampires should be, scary, sexy and all have an evil streak!

Will be buying the following books as soon as I can get to a bookstore!!

Harris also seems compelled to informs us in detail every few pages of what her main character is wearing, something that seems kinda baffling once you realize she has the fashion sense of a flamingo thrown into the Sixth Doctor's wardrobe.
Just stick with True Blood and you'll be fine.

  • This is the first book of the "Southern Vampire Mysteries" and I did not enjoy it.
Luckily the first one that I read was the third of the series, which is nice and funny. Had I read "Dead Until Dark" in the first place, I would not even have bothered with the following stories!

My suggestion? Skip the first two books and enjoy the rest. Oh, and forget about the TV series- quite horrible.
