My mom told it was very good and I love Stephen King but for whatever reason I wasn't expecting to really get into this book but I did. It's very good.

What I love about King is his absolute love for his characters. It can't be anything else, it must be love.

This, as everyone know, is the story of a father and daughter who are on the run. They possess extraordinary powers and as we learnt to know from countless of similar works of fiction (of which Firestarter might be one of the earliest and finest examples), the Government wants them.

Andy MgGee, the father, has minor mental domination powers, which cost him pain and stress every time he uses them. Charlie McGee, on the other hand... well, it's not like you don't know it, given the title. As Andy himself puts it, "You're a firestarter honey... just one big Zippo lighter".

The novel is big but also vastly enjoyable. I remember watching the flick when I was younger and of course I liked it, but how it pales in comparison with the book. All the characters are really well written and expecially the nature of these powers, their side effects and unexpected results, are masterfully delineated.

A book I advise to everyone.

  • This is my favorite Stephen King, to date, but then I'm not actually a huge King fan, so I'm not quite sure what that says. I found this one more fascinating and less disturbing, which is a good thing, in my opinion.

  • Memory Lane: I picked this up at a neighbor's house while babysitting one afternoon. I was totally hooked, and went straight to the library the next day so that I could finish it. I've probably read this book more times than almost anything else. It's definitely my all time favorite King book.
