Here there be dragons . . . and the denizens of Ankh-Morpork wish one huge firebreather would return from whence it came. Long believed extinct, a superb specimen of draco nobilis ("noble dragon" for those who don't understand italics) has appeared in Discworld's greatest city. Not only does this unwelcome visitor have a nasty habit of charbroiling everything in its path, in rather short order it is crowned King (it is a noble dragon, after all . . .).

Meanwhile, back at Unseen University, an ancient and long-forgotten volume -- The Summoning of Dragons -- is missing from the Library's shelves. To the rescue come Captain Vimes, Constable Carrot, and the rest of the Night Watch who, along with other brave citizens, risk everything, including a good roasting, to dethrone the flying monarch and restore order to Ankh-Morpork (before it's burned to a crisp). A rare tale, well done as only Terry Pratchett can. [예스24 제공]

    First Watch Book

Probably not even PTerry was aware that he was creating the most versatile cast of characters in the Discworld history...
Vimes is here just a drunk, cynical cop, mimicking the seventies' movies cliches (mostly Insp. Harry Callahan), and Vetinari is not the scheming bastard of the latest books, ... (continue)

  • The first Watch book! aka the first Vimes book!
    Aww, Captain Vimes ♥
Anyway, it's brilliant and beautiful, the characters are perfect and the plot interesting, and the only reason why I gave it 4 stars it's because I've read the newer discworld novels and I know this is not Pratchett's best.

It's a good way to get an introduction to the Discworld, so I surely recommend it for somebody who never read any of his books from this (super-long) series.

I loved it, chuckled a lot, and at the same time I thought. I guess that's what I like about Pratchett's books: they're funny and entertaining, but in a very, very clever way.

  • Not just any noir novel

This is one of my absolute favourites. From the shaping up of the City Watch, through the deranged Secret Society people, to Lady Ramkin, this novel is fit to carry a whole sub-series on its shoulders. From the shaping up of the City Watch, through the deranged Secret Society people, to Lady Ramkin, this novel is fit to carry a whole sub-series on its shoulders. The immense depth of the storytelling, the expertly detailed characters (human and otherwise) and the wry observations on what humans are really like all together make for a reading experience like few others.
