No heroism, no glorification of war. Just one long parade of injury, despair and death. Powerful novel.

Well-written - and an up-to-date, excellent translation. I suspect a realistic - and often graphic depiction of the life of a First World War soldier. My favourite bit, Paul being caught in no man's land on a reconnaissance mission and having to play dead in a crater whilst an enemy attack goes on all around him - and as the attack is beaten back, how an unsuspecting French soldier stumbles over him and is dealt a fatal wound by Paul, who - still cut off from his own trench - is trapped in the shell hole with the dying Frenchman and becoming tormented by guilt, he administer's first aid and starts to make promises to the dying man, who can't move or speak... it's powerful stuff. In some way, I am glad I've finished it, glad that it is over. But also, I am glad I've read it too.
