In this humorous sequel to The Wee Free Men, Tiffany has got to learn to be a real witch really quickly, with the help of arch-witch Mistress Weatherwax

Tiffany Aching, a hag from a long line of hags, is trying out her witchy talents again as she is plunged into yet another adventure when she leaves home and is apprenticed to a “real” witch. This time, will the thievin’, fightin’ and drinkin’ skills of the Nac Mac Feegle – the Wee Free Men – be of use, or must Tiffany rely on her own abilities?

This is the third novel in the junior Discworld series that started with the enormously popular tale: The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents.

    Magik ain't magic

[Note: This book follows "The Wee Free Men"... it's best to read that first ^_-]

The Nac Mac Feegle clan has a new kelda, but they still cherish the "other one". By the way, Tiffany is now eleven and she's sent "learnin' witching up in the mountains", where she'll meet some other girls of her ... (continue)

The Nac Mac Feegle clan has a new kelda, but they still cherish the "other one". By the way, Tiffany is now eleven and she's sent "learnin' witching up in the mountains", where she'll meet some other girls of her age with all the nastiness that comes with a young girls coven...

This is a story of duty, pride, jealousy, geas (no, not the bird) and the meaning and purpose of magic... oh, I almost forgot: it's a story with Mistress Weatherwax. That wraps it all up, isn't it?

One more brilliant episode in Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Aching saga, that here abandons the children-oriented mood of his first two "junior fiction" novels (even though it is still labeled so) to join steadily the main Discworld series, helped by the presence for long parts of the novel of that Granny Weatherwax that we met in many other episodes of the series. Solidly tongue-in-cheek like most of Pratchett's works, but still interesting in exploring the characters... the third attempt at a "Bildungsroman" by Pratchett (after "Mort" and "Faust"), and probably the more successful at it even if maybe sometimes less side-splitting funny.

  • An entertaining read -- vintage Pratchett, here writing for a slightly younger audience.

I won't go into a description of the plot, just wanted to say that, though listed as a children's novel, younger people might find the concept of the Hiver confusing (as may older readers, too.) Containing the expected wit and vigor of other Pratchett novels, this continuation of the Tiffany Aching story is more complex than the previous entry and young people might find it difficult to fully comprehend.
