Unabridged Audiobook - 9 CDs, 10 hours, 12 minutes - Read by Shelly Frasier

When Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert of Green Gables send for a boy orphan to help them out at their farm, they mistakenly get Anne Shirley, a feisty, independent but warm-hearted 11 year-old girl. Fortunately her sunny nature and quirky imagination win the hearts of her reluctant foster parents and everyone in the community. But not a day goes by without some memorable adventure or prank in the tragicomedy of her life. Early on she accidentally dyes her "cursed" red hair green. Later, in an effort to impress a neighbor she bakes a cake, but with liniment instead of vanilla.

Lucy wrote that Anne is an extension of herself and represents the independent, "new" woman of the emerging 20th century. Individualistic, resourceful, and of a great humanitarian heart, she remains a great role model for girls and women today.

This book holds a special place in my heart. It was my first "big book" when I was 9. It sparked my love of reading, and for that, I will always cherish the trials and triumphs of the orphan girl who just wanted to be loved.

Some have criticized this book for being overly sentimental. But for those who cannot appreciate the simple charm and captivation of innocent childhood, I have no sympathy. This is a lovely, sweet, enchanting book which every young girl should read.

This was a reread. I read the book when I was young. I felt I was meeting an old friend. • Lovely.
The freckled girl with red braids is irresistable, with her neverending daydreams and her larger than life optimism. In her unstoppable reverie she turns the pictoresque Candian countryside in Fairyland and her love for life is contagius for the reader.

It is a Classic for young readers, but is one of those books that reminds me page after page why I'm so addicted to reading.
