When Kira's mother dies, leaving her alone, neighbors want her to be "taken to the field" because of her handicap and uselessness to the community, but the Guardians choose to keep her because of her skill with threads. It turns out that 3 orphaned children with unique skills have been mysteriously orphaned and taken in by the Guardians. The children live in luxury now, while most people live in squalor and amidst constant fights and abuse. Kira discovers that it doesn't have to be this way, but what can she do about it? Read the book. It's pretty good.
