  In this account of his life Johnny Cash is extremely honest about his failings. Not until well into the story does he mention his early home life under a drunken father - a father who never ever told him he loved him - and bullying husband. Cash, however, grew up in a Christian environment via his mother, and always regarded himself as a Christian. Later on in life after 'an experience' in a cave, he committed himself fully to Christ. He took a three years Bible correspondence course and spent a lot of time studying the Bible. He loved Gospel songs and had always wanted to sing them, but the recording studio SUN wouldn't hear of it, wanting him to record only Country. After Cash became well known he often sang Gospel at his 'gigs'.

  Cash's life is very sad reading. An extremely talented man driven by drink and drugs. Unfortunately in the 1950's he only had to tell his doctor he had a long drive ahead of him to get a bottle of amphetamines . So he began his habit.

  His relationship with June Carter, however, made a tremendous difference to his life. Although married when the attraction began they developed a deep love for each other. Carter helped him change. Cash describes her as 'a real prayer-warrior.' Billy Graham contacted Cash and they became firm friends. Billy Graham often had Cash sing at his campaigns. I was at Wembley when Cash sang with June Carter.

  How easy it would be to condemn a man like Cash. But as Pastor Willie Mullen once said, "don't look down your nose at the poor drunk, you've never been in that man's shoes!" If we get to heaven it will be full of surprises!

  Lovely

  Reading this book was the closest thing to being chatting with Johnny Cash having a coke. Awesome how even simple written it can be touching.
