With a compassionate realism and narrative sweep that recall the work of Charles Dickens, this magnificent novel captures all the cruelty and corruption, dignity and heroism, of India. The time is 1975. The place is an unnamed city by the sea. The government has just declared a State of Emergency, in whose upheavals four strangers--a spirited widow, a young student uprooted from his idyllic hill station, and two tailors who have fled the caste violence of their native village--will be thrust together, forced to share one cramped apartment and an uncertain future.

As the characters move from distrust to friendship and from friendship to love, A Fine Balance creates an enduring panorama of the human spirit in an inhuman state.

  • A Fine Balance By Rohinton Mistry

Rohinton Mistry's fine novel, A Fine Balance, with its non-Western setting, differs from most of the books chosen for Oprah's Book Club, but I'm delighted that the novel, and now this audio, wonderfully narrated by Madhur Jaffrey, have gotten renewed ... (read full critics)

  • States of Emergency

“ Un roman est un miroir…” Stendhal said. “A novel is a mirror which passes over a highway. Sometimes it reflects to your eyes the blue of the skies, at others the churned-up mud of the road.” Of course, not all novelists choose to carry mirrors of p ... (read full critics)

One of my absolute favourite books, though I've never been able to read it a second time because it's too emotionally draining.

An amazing piece of literature that keeps you hooked till the very last page. Having said that, A Fine Balance is the one book that broke my heart. The description of everyday life in India of the lower classes, is so realistically painful that I had to stop reading it and get back to it a few days later. A must, though, for those who appreciate excellent writing.

  • A Fine Balance

A wonderful novel depicting one of the many difficult periods in India's history, the 1970's 'State of Internal Emergency' I got really immersed in this one, what a cruel world we live in. I felt so very sad for the main characters and the way they coped with everything that life threw at them. Life ... (continue)

A wonderful novel depicting one of the many difficult periods in India's history, the 1970's 'State of Internal Emergency' I got really immersed in this one, what a cruel world we live in. I felt so very sad for the main characters and the way they coped with everything that life threw at them. Life never seemed to improve either, just got steadily worse! I recommend this highly.
