A delightfully dishy novel about the all-time most impossible boss in the history of impossible bosses.

Andrea Sachs, a small-town girl fresh out of college, lands the job “a million girls would die for.” Hired as the assistant to Miranda Priestly, the high-profile, fabulously successful editor of Runway magazine, Andrea finds herself in an office that shouts Prada! Armani! Versace! at every turn, a world populated by impossibly thin, heart-wrenchingly stylish women and beautiful men clad in fine-ribbed turtlenecks and tight leather pants that show off their lifelong dedication to the gym. With breathtaking ease, Miranda can turn each and every one of these hip sophisticates into a scared, whimpering child.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA gives a rich and hilarious new meaning to complaints about “The Boss from Hell.” Narrated in Andrea’s smart, refreshingly disarming voice, it traces a deep, dark, devilish view of life at the top only hinted at in gossip columns and over Cosmopolitans at the trendiest cocktail parties. From sending the latest, not-yet-in-stores Harry Potter to Miranda’s children in Paris by private jet, to locating an unnamed antique store where Miranda had at some point admired a vintage dresser, to serving lattes to Miranda at precisely the piping hot temperature she prefers, Andrea is sorely tested each and every day—and often late into the night with orders barked over the phone. She puts up with it all by keeping her eyes on the prize: a recommendation from Miranda that will get Andrea a top job at any magazine of her choosing. As things escalate from the merely unacceptable to the downright outrageous, however, Andrea begins to realize that the job a million girls would die for may just kill her. And even if she survives, she has to decide whether or not the job is worth the price of her soul.

If you have ever worked for an unreasonable boss or taken a job where you have had to compromise your values, then this book is likely to appeal. I don't normally "do" chick-lit but I raced through The Devil Wears Prada if only because the plight of ... (read full critics)

I had to stop in the first chapter because the job of our heroine, Andrea, seemed too scary for me to continue reading.

Then I watched the movie which was excellent. It was very smart of the script writer to change the order of the story so that we understand what type of job it is before going into the "horrible-boss" details. It turned out that this job is not that bad at all, and I actually sympathize the boss.

The movie is much better than the book.

It was not as good as I thought it was going to be. It was good for what I meant it as, which was something to read on the plane when I went to Europe, but I found myself cringing at certain places.

The motion picture is better than the novel. They hold different endings too. The acting of Meryl Streep is absolutely excellent.

The audio-book is extremely enjoyable: easy to understand and it does not require much attention (good for long walks!).

Miranda is worse in the book and more “the real asshole boss” Also I have appreciated the adaption made for the movie, so spotting out the differences made the listening more interesting and enjoyable.

I know this book is not hot off the press, after all, how many years ago was it my daughter and I went to see the film in the cinema shortly after its release. However, I still thought I'd do a little review. Of course, having seen the film already I see Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt in their respective roles, but the book is as usual better than the film. A fun look at life in the world of fashion, working for a topclass, world wide magazine. Imagine Anna Wintour or Tina Brown (oh hang on, she's supposed to be nice) and you get the idea. Of course, one would have access to the 'closet' (the cupboard full of designer samples), top class make up, hair, beauticians and stylists. The pressure would be at boiling point and food would be a dirty word. It's the world most young girls dream about and the competition is very high. It amazes me how many of the uninitiated let themselves be treated in such a manner but if that it your dream you would do anything to achieve it. I liked our heroine Andy who has sound principles but occasionally needs a little reminder, after all who in reality is flawless?
