a work of journalistic genius, widely acknowleged, brilliantly relaying the vacuous pointlessness of a particular crime. no doubt it appeared extraordinary in its brutality and randomness to contemporary americans. today, it feels commonplace. which says something...

The topic is deeply knot to real life but in a sense the account of the murder is shaped by the fiction.
Yet the writer uses some good narrative tecniques like the juxtapositions of the criminals' lives and those of the Clutters', which go both hand by hand till the murderous climax. In addition, the reader can perceive that from a certain point of the narration the writer uses Smith's idiolect, choosing the therms that Perry wants to learn in his thirst for education.
