Navigating between the Indian traditions they've inherited and the baffling new world, the characters in Jhumpa Lahiri's elegant, touching stories seek love beyond the barriers of culture and generations. In "A Temporary Matter," published in The New Yorker, a young Indian-American couple faces the heartbreak of a stillborn birth while their Boston neighborhood copes with a nightly blackout. In the title story, an interpreter guides an American family through the India of their ancestors and hears an astonishing confession. Lahiri writes with deft cultural insight reminiscent of Anita Desai and a nuanced depth that recalls Mavis Gallant. She is an important and powerful new voice.

  • Book Review: The Interpreter of Maladies Share

Some books pop out and grab the reader all at once. Others take longer and then sneak up on you. This is one of the those. I read it a year or so ago not expecting much from a woman's book of short stories about India and Indians. But it had been a g ... (read full critics)

    Interpreter of Maladies

Nine short stories told from a Bengali point of view that really bring to life the experience of taking a step outside of the familiar by coming to America and/or relating to the American people.

Lahiri is a storyteller who illustrates beauty in simplicity.
Her writing is direct and easy, yet artistically and expertly controlled.
The Interpreter of Maladies showcases characters that are simple, human, very believable, a pleasure to be with. Despite the thematic similarity, each story is unique; she celebrates love and life in day to day experience, instead of looking for shocking surprises as so many short stories seem to.
This book established Jhumpa Lahiri as one of my favorite authors.
