Tuck Everlasting, by Natalie Babbitt, is a story about everlasting life. It is a fact that, for humans death can be hard to accept, but it is something that everyone must face. Since ancient times, people have been trying “miraculous doze” to live forever. However, in this book, the case is totally different. Through this story, we may see life with a new perspective.
In the beginning of this story, Natalie Babbitt uses a seat of a pausing Ferris wheel to symbolize the Tucks’ life. After drinking from the spring, the Tucks accidentally realized that their times were halted, and they would live forever. Nevertheless, this is not a blessing, but an enduring curse. The Tucks had to live in seclusion and shifted from place to place to avoid being found out of the secret. They can’t make friends; otherwise, the people could find out their secret and treat them as freaks. They feel lonely and helpless. Mr. Tuck thirsted for going back to the circulation of life, the wheel, and doesn’t want to face the fact that he had to live forever. In the same way, Mae, his wife, doesn’t want to live forever, either, but she accepted it. For Jesse, their son, he couldn’t get married, caused he would never find a mate. Even if he did, he would end up like his brother Miles, who was abandoned by his wife and children when they found that he never grow old. The Tucks’ life was totally ruined.
Many people think that living forever without growing old is fantastic, but they don’t know the grief behind it. People who live forever have to gradually watch their dearest families, friends pass away one by one, but they still continue to live on alone. It will be endless loneliness. In the Chinese folktale of Chang’e, we are also told of how lonely she felt after swallowing the elixir and flying to the moon. The world moves and changes alone with time. Human beings are parts of the movement. We arrive in the world, live, and die. This is the natural law for us. To rebel against it, we have to take the consequence of never ending solitude.
Even though our lives are transient we still can do something ageless, like Winnie in the book. By helping the Tucks to run away, the secret of everlasting life is kept and people won’t fall into the trap of a never ending life. Although, one day, through medical technology, people can live forever, we still have to keep this in mind: Our value doesn’t depend on how long we live, but on how much we can bring to the world.

  • A great story that is a quick read. I think it is a good story to make a person think about what they would do in a similar situation.
